First generation audience recording. Jim is pretty drunk for this show and has a lot of fun with the audience. Unlike in Miami, he doesn't berate the crowd, but does threaten to kill someone if his monitors aren't turned up as "Five To One" starts. "Hey listen, if I can't hear myself a little bit louder than that, I'm just gonna quit, go out, and kill some people! C'mon!" The band keeps vamping but Jim continues to playfully talk with the audience. After over six minutes of banter he asks, "What song are we singing?" and finally begins the lyrics to "Five To One." After a surprisingly tight version of "When The Music's Over," the band goes into "Soul Kitchen" and during the song's second verse, Jim misses his cue. Toward the end of the song, the band realizes that Jim isn't interested in finishing the lyrics and they break into "Light My Fire." By the end of the concert, Jim is incoherent and screaming more and more until he finally jumps into the audience. He manages to get back onstage (with the help of a number of stage hands) and barely finishes "Light My Fire" before leaving the stage. At the very end of the tape, you can hear the house announcer ask the audience for Jim's coat. ("Has anyone seen Jim Morrison's coat?") Definitely an interesting night as far as Doors shows go. Only wish we had a better quality recording. Enjoy.

Information - Volume 1 CD 1:

Dear Doctor was recorded on 1968-05-13 at London's Olympic Studio and this is the first recorded take different in style and lyric to the released version. Child Of The Moon also recorded at Olympic Studio two months earlier. You Got The Silver recorded 1986-02-xx at Olympic. This is the rare version with Mick's vocals still complete? or deleted by an engineer. He was in Australia filming Ned Kelly, so vocal track was replaced with Keith's vocals.

Downtown Suzie (orig. Downtown Lucy) written by Bill Wyman and recorded 1969-04-xx at Olympic. Travellin' Man was the first song co-written by Mick Taylor during his first sessions 1970-10-xx at Olympic in company of Nicky Hopkins. Gimme Shelter done 1969=03-xx at Olympic, this take has the original vocals of Keith Richard.

Highway Child recorded with Ry Cooder on a mobile recorder in Redlands, England. Schoolboy Blues and Cocksucker Blues are two versions of what would become a final recording for Decca. First is the original slow Blues version recorded at Olympic Studios in 1970-05-xx. The second version is the full band electric version recorded sometime in the mid-seventies. Sister Morphine recorded in May 1968 at Olympic Studios and eventually released in 1971 on Stick Fingers. This one is an early release from 1968. Brown Sugar is the original version from December 1970 at Olympic Studios with Eric Clapton. Wild Horses is an alternate version from February 1970's session at Olympic Studios. Good Time Woman is the original first try at Tumblin Dice recorded in the Fall of 1970 at Olympic Studios.

Gimme A Hamburger, familiar to such compilations (aka Hamburger To Go, Stuck Out All Alone) was originally recorded May 1968 at Olympic Studios. Never has been officially released but considered many times up to and including Exile.. Ain't Gonna Lie is an outtake from the Nellcote "Exile" sessions from Fall 1971, song is aka Mean Woman Blues and I Ain't Lying. Too Many Cooks was recorded by Mick Jagger with John Lennon in 1972 or '73. Criss Cross Man and Drift Away are from the Summer of '73 sessions at Dynamic Sounds Studios in Kingston, Jamaica. Both songs are unreleased to date.

Information - Volume 1 CD 2:

Dance Little Sister is from the It's Only Rock And Roll Sessions at Munich's Musicland Studios in January 1974. Everlasting Is My Love comes from that same period but this version is from Pathé Marconi/EMI Studios in Paris in 1977. Fingerprint File is the original slower long version originally recorded at Musicland in May 1974. Fool To Cry was recorded at the Casino in Montreaux Switzerland in late 1975. Let's Go Steady is an excellent duet between Keith Richard and Chrissy Kimsey on a Sam Cooke original recorded at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas 1979-02-05.

Yellow Cab is a country rock song that goes back to Pathé Marconi in the Summer of 1978. Song aka Do You Really Think I Care and has Ian Stewart on piano. Claudine from same sessions as is Hank Williams' You Win Again with with a drunk Keith on piano sharing vocals with with Mick. Misty Roads is a kinda strange country song with Mick using falsetto vocals with Ian Stewart's piano. Recorded early March 1978 at Pathé Marconi in Paris.

We Had It All was done at Pathé Marconi in 1979 for Emotional Rescue but never released. Written by Troy Seals and Donny Fritts, it has Keith on vocals and piano and Ron Wood on pedal steel guitar. Indian Girl comes from the same sessions but is the longer version with Nicky Hopkins on piano. Summer Romance from the same sessions is a rougher take of the released version. Slave was eventually included on Tatoo You but this is the original 10 minute version (aka Black & Blue Jam or Vagina), recorded in Rotterdam in 1975 with the Rolling Stones Mobile Recorder and in 1980 at Pathé Marconi. This long version was made up from two tapes from the different sources to create the complete version.

Waiting On A Friend was also on Tatoo You but here is the original version recorded in Kingston Jamaica in December 1972, then known as Waiting _For_ A Friend or Waiting On _My_ Friend. The final track on this CD is Undercover To The Night (Undercover Of The Night) which is take 3, recorded at Pathé Marconi as the title track for the 1983 studio album Undercover. It's entirely different from the released version.

Information - Volume 2 CD 1:

Morrissey once said "the past is a strange place", well it's also a beautifull place as we start on March 19 1964 in London's Camden Theatre where the Stones recorded Cops and Robbers - a classic that unfortunately never made it to an original release. Both Have Vou Seen Your Mother and 19th Nervous Breakdown come from RCA Studio reels from the sessions in December 65 and September 66 in Hollywood, Ca. 2000 Light Years From Home is indeed a "strange place in the past" with an outtake that's even more distorted th an the original recorded at London Olympic Studios in July 67. Country Honk and Honky Tonk Women are two different takes of these classics recorded at Olympic Studios in November 69 with Mick Taylor on guitar replacing the late Brian Jones who died earlier that year.

Satisfaction (replaced) is a rare live 'outtake' from the legendary Get Yer Ya Yas Out live album from 1970. Recorded at New York City's famous Madison Square Garden on November 28 1969 . You Gotta Move was in the Stones vaults for ages but popped

up in 1970 and finally made it onto Sticky Fingers in 1971. It was recorded on the Rolling Stones Mobile in Muscle Shoals Alabama.

At Sunset Sound Studio in L.A Jagger recorded Exile On Mainstreet Blues on March 28 1972. I Don't Know The Reason Why was originally recorded at the same studios in 69 and was then known as Hillside Blues. Jiving Sister Fanny also originates from 1969's

Olympic Studio sessions and another take was actually released on Metamorphosis in 1975. Still A Fool is also known as Two Trains Running and fits nicely to the Exile on Mainstreet outtakes Loving Cup, Potted Shrimp, Shake Your Hips and Stop Breaking Down. Sway is a worthy final note on disc one, recorded in Stargroves Studios in Newbury on the Rolling Stones Mobilé with Nicky Hopkins on piano.

Information - Volume 2 CD 2:

Winter opens cd two with an excellent alternate version of this Goats Head Soup classic from '73 recorded at Kingston's Dynamic Studio in december 1972. Living ln The Heart Of Love and If You Can't Rock Me were both recorded in January 1974 in Munich's's Musicland Studios. ln 1977 the Stones record 2 shows at the El Mocambo ln Toronto to complete their Love You Live album recorded the year before in Paris:' Little Red Rooster is a raw live version, taken from an early acetate, unlike the polished version released on LYL.

The next couple of years the Stones reside in the Pathé Marconi Studios in Paris where Faraway Eyes, I Can't Help It, I Need You, I Think I Am Going Mad, No More Spare Parts and So Young were recorded over the years. After Keith Richards went into rehab and returned clean and sober for the Tattoo You Tour he moved into Long View Farm Studios and laid down some intimate piano tracks that included Nearness Of You and Over The Rainbow.

I Talked her Into It or I Tried To Talk Her into it as well as She Was Hot are both from 1983's Undercover sessions at Pathé Marconi studios in Paris. The first is a country rocker that didn't make the album, the 2nd a country attempt at She Was Hot that is here in its original 9 minute incarnation. ln 1985 the Stones return to Paris one more time to record Dirty Work of which Crushed Pearl is an outtake that strongly reminds of Keith's first solo album from 1988. The final song brings us to the present with a recently discovered alternate take of Dangerous Beauty, one of the best tracks on the Bigger Bang album.

I tried to find a track that was as close to the spirit of the compilation as possible, around same date, but had a clear lineage that was not involved with the commercially released GYYYO album. Considered 5 tracks which fit these characteristics, 2 of them sounded thin and distant. The better of those was a 1st show recording but had little stereo effect, KR and CW prominent, MT and BW low, seemed too fast to me. I moved on.

Two of the 3 other tracks were older but sounded better:

12. VGP-018 27th.flac (1969-11-27) is pretty clear both guitars nicely audible, KR on the right, MT on the left, interaction is audible, speed sounds realistic, ends with "Thang you" and applause. This is a good recording! -->

MT on the left and KR on the right both easily audible if played loudly and the interaction between lead and rhythm guitars is easy to appreciate. Speed is faster and the rest of the band cooks along. This is the one I picked. -->

Satisfaction 2nd.flac (1969-11-28) "This is a decent audience recording of the last of the Rolling Stones' shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City, all of which were recorded for "Get Yer Ya-Yas Out." "Midnight Rambler" is identical to "Ya-Yas" and "Satisfaction" t12 has similarities. (this might well be the reason why the original t08 for this collection was withdrawn.) With a fast listen, the track cuts in with an abrupt start but seems like no music is lost. MT is real clear but KR is less so but hearable, speed seems realistic, long applause at the end. downloaded 2007-12-11. Seems probable that it's official to me.

I included a file (Stones Satisfaction choices) which includes the seriously considered replacement files. Feel welcome to try them out and see if you agree. It's a tricky decision.

Information - Volume 3, CD 1:

We Got A Good Thing Going is a raritie that is nowhere listed but was according to our reels of a January 1964 recording session in London's IBC Regent Studios. Sometimes Happy, Sometimes Blue was recorded on December 5 1966 in London's Olympic studios. The Last Time is from January 17 at De Lane Lea Studios in London. Family is a Beggars Banquet outtake about a family with 2 daughters that want to become prostitutes. The song was only finished half a few times, together they finally make the entire song on this CD. From those same sessions in the Summer of '68 comes Stray Cat Blues in its original incarnation.

I Don't Know Why (I Love Vou, Baby) is a song with a story. This Stevie Wonder cover was recorded in the night of July 3 1969 in OIympic Studios, while mixing the song the session was interrupted by a phone call from the wife of Brian Jones' chauffeur announcing the death of Brian. (may he RIP)

Stewed And Keefed was often refered to as a" Jamming With Edward" outtake but is actual a instrumental from as early as 1964 recorded at Chicago's Chess Studios with Keith on guitar and lan Stewart on piano duelling on this master piece. Blood Red Wine brings us back to the' 68 Olympic Studios sessions for Beggars Banquet. Nellcote, France. January 1972 and the recording of their masterpiece Exile On Mainstreet. (!!)

All Down The Line, Sweet Virginia, Shine A Light, and Shake Your Hips are all taken from these sessions. I'm Going Down was also recorded at Nellcote but the take here is from 1969's OIympic Stludios sessions. Angie was written by Keith for his daughter Angela and was recorded in Jamaica at Dynamic Sounds in Kingston in December 1972. The final 3 tracks on CD one are 'till The NextTime (We Say Goodbye), Time Waits For No One and Ain't Too Proud To Beg. All were recorded for It's Only Rock And Roll in 1974 at Munich's Musicland studios. These versions are quite different and more hard edge than the originals!

Information - Volume 3, CD 2:

Miss You is from the lengthy Pathé Marconi sessions in Paris in the Fall of 1977. This version is similar but longer with different Iyrics and solos than the final released version. Let's Go Steady Again was recorded on the Bahamas at the famous Compass Point studios in Nassau in February 1979. This amazing Sam Cooke cover is a duet between Keith and Chrissy Kimsey, Chris Kimseys wife who was producing and engineering. Unfortunately it was never released on CD until now. It was played though in the New Barbarians setlist during some of their concerts.

Beast Of Burden brings us back to Pathé Marconi with a totally different version, lyrically that is! Ain't No Use ln Cryin was also done at Pathé Marconi, the Stones'2nd home in the late 70's, during the Summer of 1979 and would later wind up on Tattoo You'. This version however is lengthier with great piano and organ work by Hopkins and Stewart. We jump to 1988, nearly 10 years later with this very early take of Slippin' Away. Possibly recorded for Keith's first solo album. It was dropped or simply never finished properly untill Keith and Mick gave it a second change and a classic was born. These sessions were recorded at the famous AIR studios in Montserrat. The next 4 tracks all come from the Windmill Lane studios in Dublin where the Stones recorded Voodoo Lounge with producer Don Was. First is the rare long version of Thru And Thru with percussion and Pierre de Beauport, Keith's guitar tech, on guitar. The song was written after a night out and once returning home Keith insisted on recording the track with Pierre. This is the 3rd take/attempt with percussion by Bernard Fowler. Love Is Strong is a final rehearsal take recorded at Ron Wood's Sandymount Studios in Kildare, lreland. Ivy League is a sister of Mooon is Up. This version has a first set of lyrics but unfortllnately it was never finished as it was too similar to Moon Is Up. Sparks Will Fly is also from Winmill Lane and is an outtake version.

The final 3 songs brings us to the present day. These are all A Bigger Bang outtakes that are different to the versions released on CD or DVD and recorded in St. Vincent on the West Indies. Under The Radar and I Don't Wanna Go Home are great songs that were dropped from the final album tracklist but made it as DVD bonustracks on the Bigger Bang Bonus DVD. These versions however are different, early studio takes as is The Streets Of Love which closes this final part of Through The Vaults Darkly in style.
