The tape was purchased by a friend of mine at a record show shortly after the

concert and could be 1 generation from the master. Sadly, it is incomplete, cutting

at the end of Countdown. I feel this source is much better than the complete version

of the show that is circulating, which is from a different source.

Remastered by Duley - Recording ran a bit too fast. I reduced the

speed by 2.3%. I also added a bit of EQ, not much, to the low end

and high end. No noise reduction was used. Recut on sector

FM->Mitsubishi 4 Head Hi-Fi VCR(High Grade Video Tape)->Sony Mini Disc(For any editing and track placement)->Pioneer stand-alone cd recorder(via optical cable)->CDr->WAV->Flac FrontEnd(level 6)->Flac->You

What seems like an odd set-up to record actually provided me with may years of good results for these FM broadcasts from Milwaukee's Summerfest. The reason I did it this way was because I wanted to be able to record straight through without changing mini-discs or cd-r's. Around 2000-01 I was also just buying my first PC so doing any sort of editing there vs. mini disc was out of the question for this then newbie. I think the overall quality is excellent and only the best equipment and media was used year in and year out. I also think that my source is the one that is most circulated for this show because of my track 11/12 placement. Everyone shows the tracklisting that way so I guess other's like the way this turned out.

Enjoy!

There are no fades applied to this recording; if you choose to burn to CD, the above splits are just a suggestion.

Comments: This recording features Bruce at Miller Park in Milwaukee at the tail end of the 2002-03 "Rising" tour -- this was essentially a warmup show for the Shea Stadium dates that closed the tour a few days later. The setlist was a bit jumbled compared to the typical cadence of the tour (for example, I don't think he opened with "Candy's Room" too often) and though there were some relative rarities like "The Fuse" and "Across the Border," nothing jaw-droppingly unexpected. Overall, however, this captures the E Street Band in top form, loose, and in a playful mood. Of course, very few Milwaukee shows fail to feature "Cadillac Ranch" (due to the Wisconsin reference) and here it was the last song.

In terms of sound quality, this is a very solid if not excellent capture. I've had five sources of this show (including my master) over the years and this is the best version I've heard. We were in line with the right stack so had excellent sound, and were fortunate to have courteous neighbors whose occasional chatter doesn't overpower the music (not always a given in Milwaukee -- I have had several Milwaukee masters ruined by boisterous/rude neighbors who treated the show as a backdrop for their conversation). If you're a Bruce fan and have a version of this already, this is still worth the download because it is probably an upgrade.

Check out the samples in the comments if in doubt.

What a performance! Roger outdid himself on this tour. I think this is the best tour he has done and there have been some great ones. The band he has on this tour is awesome!! Those girls on vocals.....I am thinking "where did he find them??" Definitely this performance is one for the ages. I was at Chicago, Milwaukee and Auburn Hills shows. This is my favorite of the three. Chicago (28th) was second best. What fantastic dynamic range. Don't forget this needs to be played loud on the finest stereo system.

Comments:

A friend of mine was kind enough to transfer my master DAT since none of my five DAT machines work. Since 25 1/2 years have passed and I don't believe I have ever shared my source of this show, I thought it might be worthy to post to Dime.

Eric Clapton's tour supporting his 1998 release "Pilgrim" ran from late March 1998 through the end the year; this recording captures the 5th night of the tour as the band were settling into a setlist. The core band was augmented by a local symphony orchestra in each city, with uneven results -- I saw three dates of the tour (this date plus the two Chicago shows that followed) and I remember only sporadically being able to hear the contributions of the orchestra. However, when one was able to hear the backing orchestra, the effect was nice.

In terms of the performance, I give EC credit for his courage for opening with six consecutive songs from what was then a new and relatively unheard album -- the crowd, more or less, allowed him grace to play the new material without becoming disruptive. However, all of the "new" songs tended to be slow shuffles; the momentum builds once he gets back to older material in the last third of the show.

Of note, this is one of the last performances of the song "Sick and Tired," a new song in traditional blues style about domestic violence which was perfectly acceptable back in the day but generated considerable backlash even in 1998. The song was dropped due to public outcry a few days after this show. To be honest, I like the overall performance more now than I did at the time -- he was really enthusiastic about the new material and it shows; his guitar work is really creative.

In terms of the recording itself, I remastered the source recording to bring out the high end, since the Sonics (though they did a great job) produced a significant dropoff in the higher frequencies. There is one guy near me who you can hear making comments between songs, but in general there really isn't audience noise that interferes with the recording. I was pleasantly surprised with how good this recording sounds after all these years.

Total Time ::: 1:36:11

::: Now a solid VG++ AUD, substantially improved. Check samples for toodle-oo or whoopee & oodles of joy.

::: Warts: Repaired dullspots & dropouts but surely missed a few. Some bonafide f'ing idiots yelling "Oh, Well", etc, loud&repeatedly, fortunately between songs (lowered where possible&tracked for avoidance possibility). Clapping in music in a few spots removed/lowered where possible (esp.#16). #19 fades in 3secs late (tapeflip).

::: COMPARISON CLAUSE: This is the Mk2 remaster of the original "Mk1" grplasa 2020-03-27 upload at http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-d....php?id=671988

::: This recording went from VG+ with a number of irritations to a very solid VG++ with very few distractions after remastering.

::: #22 unknown "blues" song, presumably by Welch which segues into "Rattlesnake Shake". Anyone know the title?

::: Triumvirat was the opening act for this concert.

::: "Heroes Are Hard To Find" USA tour 1974-10-02 to 1974-12-02 (43 shows).

::: "Heroes Are Hard To Find" recorded in Los Angeles July'74. Released 1974-09-13.

::: "Heroes Are Hard To Find" 1st FM LP to reach USA Top 40. #34 Billboard chart peak.

::: Bob Welch left Fleetwood Mac in December 1974, after this tour.

::: Small folder size due to only using better R channel of mono tape after remastering.

::: Mk1 seemed narrow stereo. L channel ~8000Hz, R ~12,000. Matched L high end to R & synched channels & it sounded mono. Therefore, after extensive remastering, & patching from L, used only superior R channel which dramatically stabilized & improved the sound.

Recording Information ::: unknown mono recorder/microphone -> master mono tape(s) -> ? -> unknown generation grplasa trade CD-R's -> DBPoweramp Rip (Accurate extraction with ID3 Tag Editing) -> TLH checksums & torrent.

Remastering 2020-04-xx ::: grplasa unknown generation flacs -> Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset, channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, clap, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, #01-16 +1.4%, #17-23 +2.2%, #24-26 +2.8% pitch (speed) fixes if necessary with single pass per segment after frequency analysis & with pitchpipe verification, NO equalisation (*except on split second mike bumps), no noise reduction] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. (NOTE: AUD noise deleted: 1min@start (mike noises),1min before encore,3mins at end. ClipFix@97 applied to Rchan last 34mins as it was slightly oversaturated in tape transfer (but still superior to L channel). ONLY used R channel in fincal version, after patches). Freed 2020-04-xx.

Line-up ::: "Bob" Robert Lawrence Welch Jr. (†R.I.P.† 2012) - electric guitar, vocals // Christine Anne McVie (née Perfect) - keyboards, vocals // John Graham McVie - electric bass // "Mick" Michael John Kells Fleetwood - drums.

This is the same recorder as Demamo's 1st gen which Bert13 previously shared after I transferred it. This version sounds significantly crisper and cleaner at the top end. Demano's tapes have a slightly better low end or it might just be that my deck brought it out better.

I joined the individual files together and applied a global correction of -2.04% using Élastique 2.28 Pro. My thanks as ever to goldenband for his speed correction advice. I also added 1.27dB before dividing, track naming and exporting.
