(009053) Lou Reed - 29 October 1976, "I Never Said I Was Nice" Live at the Orpheum Theatre, Boston, Massachusetts FLAC

WBCN FM Radio Broadcast

Lou Reed live at the Orpheum Theatre, Boston, Massachusetts, 29 October 1976, sourced from a cassette of the WBCN FM Radio Broadcast. A first edit was made to fade in the start of the first song slightly less abruptly, fade out the end song's crowd clapping/tuning of both CDs (they originally stopped suddenly), boost the volume of the inter-song crowd noise/tuning, and remove 38 seconds of the DJ's chatter that didn't relate to this concert. A second edit has been made to restore the between-disc fades, remove all the DJ talk before the encore, "Heroin", and in that song, to repair two faults in the start, where the sound levels briefly dropped noticeably. A few songs were not broadcast, and are missing here - an intro jam, Sweet Jane, I believe in Love, Lisa says, Kicks, She's my best Friend, Waiting for the Man (all before the first track here), and the closer, Sister Ray. That said, it's a great show played to a wild crowd in excellent sound quality!

Lineage : Unknown > FM broadcast > cassette > unknown > flac > Magic Audio Cleaning Lab > CD > EAC > Wav > Flac Frontend > flac8

This is meant for a DVD-Audio, so the whole show can be played seamlessly on one disc, but a CD version is included, with fades between tracks 9 & 10 intact.

(009191) Lou Reed 1984-12-02 Copenhagen Falkoner Teatret, DK (Master) (16-bit) (FLAC)

Yet another fresh 2023 transfer of an old uncirculated master tape. This is Lou Reed from 1984 in Copenhagen - this is LR at his best and what a nice man he could be ;-) - The show was recorded by "G" who taped a lot of the big shows from 1980 - 2000 - many of his tapes have been stashed away until now. "G" has been kind enough to let me borrow the tapes and putting them up here. He taped shows with the magnificent Sony TCD-D5M and the fine Sony ECM-150 mics. This recording sounds fresh and crisp.

One more of "G"'s fine master recordings, probably uncirculated - this was quite a night in Copenhagen - REM had their first danish show at Saga and Lou Reed had a show at Falkoner - both shows was sold out, and the reviews of both show were great - so everybody must have thought they picked the right concert for the night.

Thanks to "G" for letting me digitize his large archive - Im really enjoying it :-)

(007483) Lou Reed - 1977-08-07 - Mont de Marsan, France (AUD/FLAC)

Lou Reed: guitar, vocals
Stuart Heinrich: guitar
Michael Fonfara: keyboards
Bruce Yaw: bass
Marty Fogel: sax
Michael Suchorsky: drums
Joanne Kamorin: backing vocals

01: Sweet Jane 8.46
02: Rock And Roll Heart 3.47

09: Leave Me Alone 24.41
10: Banging On My Drum 5.16
11: Heroin 12.17

Late summer saw part 2 of Lou's 1977 European tour. He would complete these dates before closing the year with some shows in Australia and New Zealand. Over the summer, Joanne Kamorin had been installed to provide backing vocals and Stuart Heinrich had replaced Jeffrey Roth on guitar. This was a difficult time for Lou: his relationship with Rachel was falling apart and they had several separations during late 1977. The binaural live tapes he had made in Germany earlier in the year had been rejected by Clive Davis and he would have to add some new studio material to them before they would be released as "Street Hassle". There were also other problems during the tour - Lou reportedly threatened at least 1 promoter, sacked his soundman "and kicked the monitors off the stage" during one show.

This recording historically circulated as "Mont De Marsan Punk Festival", but that festival took place on the 5th and 6th August. (One of the organisers of the Punk Festival was Marc Zermati, who was also (jointly) responsible for the the first Velvet Underground vinyl bootleg - "Evil Mothers"). I suppose it could be argued that Lou "headlined" the festival by appearing the next day.....There are long gaps between some songs (over 3 minutes after "Sweet Jane") while guitars are being re-tuned, and the audience get quite restless at times. Lou doesn't directly address the audience during the whole show other than to say a cursory "thank you" just before leaving the stage. He manages to fit in only 2 tunes from his last LP - the lightweight "Rock And Roll Heart" and a (relatively) lengthy buzz-saw rendition of "Banging On My Drum" - his ode to "drug masturbation". There are no "new" songs. "Kicks" gets the usual 1977 treatment - speed manic and menacing. "Leave Me Alone" also gets a long, long workout - possibly the longest available recorded version of this song.

This is a reasonable quality audience recording - the vocals are a bit muffled but there's not too much tape hiss. At least one other audience recording of this show exists, but it is incomplete and (in my opinion) inferior to this one

Welcome to Volume 175 of the "Two Of Us" Master Series.

Between 1983 and 2002 there were not any tapers more active than the "Two Of Us". For the better part of two decades they taped over 250 artists with an array being taped multiple times.

If you collect Springsteen then you are already familiar with some of their work, "fmcleanboots" has posted a half dozen or so of their "Tunnel Of Love" tour shows but has decided to pass the baton

What you don't know is their passion was not just for Springsteen but for music and that passion runs deep. It is astonishing how many artists they taped.

They followed tours taping club shows, theater shows, arena shows, big artists, mid-level artists and local artists.

If they were following a tour and the tour had an off night they'd see who else was playing that night to tape. Always focused on enjoyment of the show as the priority,

tickets were for the most part acquired outside of the venue as they worked to obtain the best possible seats, continually trading up until the correct seats were acquired.

The results of this were the captures are uniformly excellent but on occasion the start of the show was sacrificed as a trade-off for the seats.

The heavy lifting was done by the Sony WM-D6C and an external Shure Mic before moving to DAT for the last couple of years. None of their masters have ever been circulated and

have been safely stored for the past three to four decades in a climate controlled environment. Tapes transferred so far are in pristine condition.

Though we may do some mini releases of a series of shows in order for one portion of a tour for the most part shows will not be released in order, there are just too many of them.

This will be a very exciting series and we hope along the way we upgrade existing circulating audio and offer up shows that do not have any circulating audio, enjoy the ride, this is definitely not a dark ride.

Lou Reed @ The Universal Amphitheatre - Los Angeles, CA November 1, 1984

Volume 175 continues our treasure trove of uncirculated shows with Lou Reed's November 1st LA performance on his 1984 "New Sensations" tour.

Two Of Us were in Los Angeles taping Springsteen's seven night run at the Sports Arena and instead of taking a breather on the one off night, luckily for us they decided to make the trip to the Universal Amphitheatre and pulled a great capture of Lou's performance. They did miss the first few songs acquiring tickets but what they got after that is an excellent listen.

Samples and artwork provided.

Thanks to Professor Goody's continuing attention to detail that keeps us rolling at the correct pitch week after week, show after show.

A big thanks as always to "Two Of Us" and their dedication to capturing all these legendary performers (and not taking a night off while in LA), the HOURS and HOURS spent waiting in line, traveling, money on tickets as well as trusting me to be the caretaker of their life's work, our little community is indebted to you both. Also, a big thank you to my friend "fmcleanboots" for putting me in touch and laying the groundwork that has resulted in all these great releases...we've barely scratched the surface. The amount of completely uncirculated shows they taped and continue to get into my hands for release is staggering.

The track is taken from an inferior FM source and is noticeably lower in sound quality. It's certainly worth including though as it's not included on the primary source used ("Claim 2 Fame").
