(010236) GENESIS - 1974-01-26 - Brussels, BE - DAVROS215 - Spc

Speed Corrected Version"By whom is a mystery.

Hi to all

Welcome to my series of mostly un-circulated masters & very low generation shows that i recorded or received in trades in my younger days most of my masters have not been circulated or only traded once or twice i used to trade a lot in the 70s - 80s & i have many many shows well in excess of 7,500 tapes.
Of these shows about 120 - 150 are my masters they where always on my trading list but not many got traded so i boxed them all up in the late 80s now i have decided to go through them & upload some of them.
I recorded many bands from Genesis – Bowie – Springsteen - Hawkwind - Hackett – Gabriel –
Marillion plus many many others i will try & upload a least one show a week if not two.
To record theses shows i used a Sony portable hand held tape recorder with built in stereo mics.
I always used good quality tapes to record on mainly T.D.K.
I used to insert the tape deck in a empty coffee flask with the inside taken out of the flask to get past the security ah those where the days.
The only thing i ask is please don’t sell these recording & don’t convert to mp3 etc & if you do ( only for your own use ). Please don’t change any of the files or info files etc this is so that people can tell the difference between this source & other sources as many people like to compare different versions of shows.
Also please do not remaster these shows the reason for this is these days there are far to many remasters of shows. Its ok have one remaster etc, but some are remastered that many times by different people there can be at least 10 different remasters of a show from the same source & it can get a bit tedious.
PLEASE ALSO DO NOT UPLOAD TO OTHER TORRENT SITES I WILL BE UPLOADING
THEM TO MOST MUSIC SITES WHEN I CAN GET ROUND TO IT THE REASON FOR THIS IS I HAVE NOTICED IN THE PAST SOME HAVE BEEN UPLOADED WITH FILES CHANGED ETC
DOING THIS CAUSES CONFUSION WITH THE TORRENT.
All show are RAW versions with little or no tampering with the sound

I have now up-dated my tape decks for transfering recordings from audio tapes to my PC. I am now
using the following decks
Either
Nakamichi 1000ZXL Gold Edition Or
Nakamichi Dragon

Both theses decks are considered to be the best Tape decks ever made both have auto tape Azimuth Alignment which will be used on all transfers. Both Decks have been Up-dated and serviced by trained Nakamichi specialists.
I have for the past 6 month been trying out and experimenting with theses decks and they are well worth the money amazing sound ( And should be for the money they cost ).
All the tape transfers that are done through my Yamaha Receiver are done via the pure direct button ( all the displays on the receiver and tape deck are switched off ). so there is then no interference via the electrical circuitry.
All tapes are wound forward and backward at least 4 times before i transfer them to avoid
tape slack.

On to the show for your enjoyment Davros archives presents :-

Genesis - 1974-01-26 L'Ancienne Theatre, Brussels ( DAVROS215 )

Linage :- ( c90 T.D.K-D ) - Nakamichi 1000ZXL With Auto Alinement -

TRACKS:-

01. WATCHER OF THE SKIES.
02. DANCING WITH THE MOONLIT KNIGHT.
03. THE CINEMA SHOW.
04. I KNOW WHAT I LIKE.
05. FIRTH OF FIFTH.
06. MUSICAL BOX.
07. MORE FOOL ME.( 1st 30 Seconds Only )
08. HAROLD THE BARREL.
09. SUPPERS READY.

Known Issues

"More Fool Me" is only the first 30 seconds Last minute of "Suppers Ready" Missing
Slight cut towards end of "firth of fifth" possibly a tape flip

I got this around early 1981 from a trader in France all copys of this show have i believe the same cuts ive listen to a few versions of this show this seems to be the clearest.
I don't know if this is a upgrade to any already in circulation but could be a up-grade to some The quality is Good at times V-Good

I do not claim this version is better or worse than any other version in circulation

Many many thanks to the trader for sending me a copy & the person who recorded the show

As Usual Please dont convert to mp3 ( only for your own use if you do ) Please Keep all the info files md5 etc in the folder so that other collectors know which version this is etc and most of all DO NOT SELL.

PLEASE NOTE.

This series is from my own personal collection they are NOT SOURCED FROM ANY CDRs / OTHER TORRENT SITES ETC.
They are from recordings that i traded for between 20 - 35 years ago on audio tape as stated above they have all been boxed up for the past 20 or so years.
This is the first time any of them have been Digitally transfered and torrented. All i am doing to the recordings in nero wave editor is inproving the volume ( if low),
also equallizing the left and right channel where needed. Removing hiss etc ( If i can ).
Recordings in this series that have a generation linage are the correct linage as to what i was told when i was sent the recordings. Most of the traders i traded with where well known traders so i have no reason to believe they are not the true Linage if i had any doubt to the linage at the time i did not write it down on the tape so all the low generation recordings in this series have a well known and correct linage.

Please do not remaster any of theses If you wish to do remastering of this source find yourself a better quality version and remaster that.
This version is how i remembered hearing it all them years ago and how it sounded when it was recorded the way it should be heard.

THIS IS FOR SOME PEOPLE WHO ALWAYS HAVE TO PUT THERE TWO PENITHWORTH IN AND ARE NOT SATISFIED.
I PUT SAMPLES UP TO EVERY RECORDING I UPLOAD MOST PEOPLE 99% ARE SATISFIED I PUT THE SAMPLES UP SO YOU CAN HEAR THEM BEFORE YOU DOWNLOAD THEM IF YOU DONT LIKE WHAT YOU HEAR ITS SIMPLE YOU DONT HAVE TO DOWNLOAD IT.
I OR OTHER UPLOADERS ON THESE SITES DO NOT HAVE TO SPEND TIME AND EFFORT RECORDING THESE SHOW ON A PC ETC TO UPLOAD THEM BUT WE DO AND DO IT GLADLY SO THAT OTHER TRADERS CAN HAVE THE SHOWS ETC AND ENJOY THEM.
I HAVE NEVER SAID THE SHOWS I PUT UP ARE PREFECT IN ANY WAY BUT I DO THEM TO THE BEST OF MY ABILLITY IF YOU DONT LIKE IT DONT DOWNLOAD THEM.

THATS MY MOAN FOR THE DAY SORRY LOL

Please also buy the bands official stuff and support them etc.
Thanks to all the Artists for there great music and to all the traders for keeping live music alive.

-Incident On 57th Street: opening notes cut

This release features Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performing live at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City, October 4, 1974. It was recorded by Joe Kivak, unquestionably the first serious and committed taper of Springsteen concerts. While he would go on to tape Springsteen dozens, even hundreds of times, his earliest efforts starting in the summer of 1974 provide essential and otherwise unavailable documentation of Bruce’s artistic development before the release of Born to Run in August 1975.

Joe would influence others to follow in his lead, notably Cliff B, and the entire hobby of recording and sharing live Springsteen recordings celebrates its 50th anniversary this year thanks to him. To call Kivak the Godfather of Springsteen concert taping is not hyperbole.

Maybe you’re familiar with this era, or perhaps even the show itself (which circulated previously under the titles “Incident at Avery Fisher Hall,” “I Saw Rock and Roll Future,” "LDB Special Series #461 (RLR Collection)" and “5th Gen. Tape”). Last year, Joe graciously loaned his master tapes to JEMS so we could attempt a modern and hopefully definitive preservation, capturing the sound, correcting the pitch and fixing issues to provide the best representation of this terrific and historic performance.

Let’s start with obvious attributes: it’s a (nearly) complete recording of the first New York City concert with the new-look E Street Band, featuring pianist Roy Bittan and drummer Max Weinberg, who joined in August and made their stage debuts in September. The show also marks the beginning of violinist Suki Lahav’s live E Street residency (she departed the following March). Her contributions to the band’s arrangements gave shows during her tenure a distinct sound and tone.

Change was constant for Springsteen in 1974. Shifts included evolving musical styles and his standing at CBS Records, on shaky ground after his second album tanked. He met Jon Landau, who wrote that spring that after seeing Bruce play that he had seen “rock and roll future.” Springsteen had penned a number of new songs that would soon underscore his future manager’s famous line: “Born to Run,” “She’s the One,” “Jungleland,” and “A Love So Fine” were all in various stages of development.

On paper, the shows in the autumn of ’74 hinted at that future. October 4 features three new songs (and curiously omits “Born to Run,” which was on the setlist). Springsteen peppers the balance of the 15-song set with classic ’74 sounds: a sprightly “Saint in the City” and a cover of Sam Cooke’s “Cupid,” for example. Roy Bittan stretches out on a long, languid piece to set up “Lost in the Flood.” And Lahav brings a new dimension to “Jungleland”: violin at the outset, a perfect first take.

The show came to an abrupt end when part of the stage collapsed. “On Broadway” was planned as the final number — Avery Fisher Hall is part of Lincoln Center, located at 64th Street and Broadway — but Joe’s report and voices on the PA strongly suggest that “Quarter to Three” was it. (It’s hard to know at which point in the song the trouble began, but Springsteen vamps in a way that makes it seem like he was aware of the problem.)

Regardless of how the show ended, its story doesn’t: when the opportunity arose for JEMS to revisit Kivak's pioneering work we jumped. The first show we wanted to take on was this one, with all the firsts already mentioned. It's a legendary date and a bridge to a new era as Bruce and the new-look E Street Band's live performances evolved.

More important than what we did, let’s take a moment to acknowledge what Joe did: all the circulating audio from October 4 — tape copies, silvers, remasters — springs from his source. As far as we can tell, he was the only one out on the wire that night and he is the only one to tell the story today. (The first confirmed two recorder source show would take place two weeks later at the October 18th Passaic, New Jersey show.)

We’re grateful that Joe had the vision to capture the music. While we occasionally lament the dearth of official Springsteen recordings from before 1975, more often we’re grateful for Joe and his efforts — something to celebrate a half-century later. Truly an effort worthy of Broadway — thank you, Joe!

While we did not reference all previous iterations, we generally consider the release closest to the master as the go-to for comparison. In this case, it's the "Fanatic Records" (thanks, Rob) edition, which first appeared around 2010 from a transfer by "Mr. Anonymous" to CDR then CDR to torrent (and was incidentally the first Kivak Master to circulate). Our goal was a material upgrade to that version.

This is the first azimuth-adjusted transfer directly from Joe's master tapes. As far as cuts, the recording has almost no issues — something of a miracle, given its vintage. There is one near the opening notes of "Incident On 57th Street" (the previous edition has a small gap and the tell-tale stop/start 1970's recorder sound). We have removed the gap and the stop/start tape drag, smoothing the cut to make it as seamless as possible. We think it’s a nice improvement.

Next, "The E Street Shuffle" had a major flaw: approximately 31 seconds in, mic movement and a lot of static make 26 seconds unlistenable. The "Fanatic Records" release cut and smoothed the section; other releases out there keep it in, with all its problematic sound.

We spent a couple hours on this issue alone, manually removing the static and mic bumps, restoring all 26 seconds without the static. This restored area starts at 00:31.504 and ends at 00:58.445. It's not perfect: at one point, the music, which is already very quiet in its natural state, pretty much disappears for about four seconds but the song is now entirely intact… the things we go through in search of completeness for a mere 26 seconds!

Another major issue we always found frustrating was the audience's tendency to clap along to songs like "Jungleland," a track that wouldn't be released for another year. Normally, this would not be a big deal, but Kivak's capture has a close, lone clapper who had a knack for clapping when no one else was and was positioned fairly close to the mic. These sharp clap sounds were embedded enough that de-click would not remove them all. The vast majority of these one-off claps have been manually removed.

Finally, we set out to tame the high-end distortion. The left channel on many releases is at its limit, and beyond! We also restored a bit of the low end, allowing more breathing room and hopefully restoring more detail. Though Joe appears to have been positioned some distance from the stage, he did an excellent job capturing the show, equipment limitations most tapers experienced in that era be damned.

Some will question the point of doing all this work on a tape of this admittedly mid-tier quality but we feel — and mjk5510 especially — that not only does every tape deserve to be heard, but the extra work here hopefully serves as a special incentive to revisit this historically important "bridge" show between Springsteen’s first two albums and his forthcoming third.

Huge respect to Joe Kivak for the foresight to capture Bruce multiple times before his star really took off. Thanks for allowing us to revisit your work! Thanks also to SE, who got the ball rolling on our little project and Goody for his never-ending work to ensure we present all our shows at the proper pitch.

Comments:

This absolutely terrible quality show is just like the other early shows on the tour - Pete is in great form, whereas the band are reserved, playing songs similar to their record counterparts.

Something interesting happens after Riding the Scree. Usually the song goes directly into In the Rapids, but at this show, they have to pause after it, and Pete gives a speech which seems to be about Mike's guitar having issues. Once they get fixed, they continue the show.

Notes:

On the band's earliest itinerary for this period, dated 9/23/1974, this show was listed as the first

for the new leg of touring with Rush opening. However, Rush was actually opening for Hawkwind at

Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall in Kansas City, MO this night.

The second show of the "Hotter than Hell" tour and first major known change to the set list in over a

year with the appearance of material from the new album in the set. With "Let Me Go, Rock 'N' Roll" having

long been performed, the set adjustment was a cautious one. Because sets are unknown for the return to touring

following the recording of the new album it's not precisely known when the new material started entering the set.

A partial SBD recording from this show is missing the first two songs and begins with an in-progress

"Got to Choose." It was one of the more exciting "leaks" during 2010, even with the inherent imperfections,

providing an early glimpse of the integration of material from the new album.

Introduction to the Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone Series

Welcome to JEMS’ Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone series presenting recordings made by legendary taper Mike Millard, AKA Mike the MICrophone, best known for his masters of Led Zeppelin done in and around Los Angeles circa 1975-77. For the complete details on how tapes in this series came to be lost and found again, as well as JEMS' long history with Mike Millard, please refer to the notes in Vol. One:

Until 2020, the Lost and Found series presented fresh transfers of previously unavailable first-generation copies made by Mike himself for friends like Stan Gutoski of JEMS, Jim R, Bill C. and Barry G. These sources were upgrades to circulating copies and in most instances marked the only time verified first generation Millard sources had been directly digitized in the torrent era.

That all changed with the discovery of many of Mike Millard’s original master tapes.

Yes, you read that correctly, Mike Millard’s master cassettes, long rumored to be destroyed or lost, have been found. Not all of them but many, and with them a much more complete picture has emerged of what Millard recorded between his first show in late 1973 and his last in early 1992.

The reason the rediscovery of his master tapes is such a revelation is that we’ve been told for decades they were gone. Internet myths suggest Millard destroyed his master tapes before taking his own life, an imprudent detail likely concocted based on the assumption that because his master tapes never surfaced and Mike’s mental state was troubled he would do something rash WITH HIS LIFE’S WORK. There’s also a version of the story where Mike’s family dumps the tapes after he dies. Why would they do that?

The truth is Mike’s masters remained in his bedroom for many years after his death in 1994. We know at least a few of Millard’s friends and acquaintances contacted his mother Lia inquiring about the tapes at the time to no avail. But in the early 2000s, longtime Millard friend Rob S was the one she knew and trusted enough to preserve Mike’s work.

David Bowie, Convention Center, Anaheim, CA, September 16, 1974

Our series marches on with a major if confounding discovery: Millard’s recording of David Bowie at the Anaheim Convention Center which was the last show on the original Diamond Dogs tour. Not only is Millard’s tape uncirculated, there are no other known recordings of this show at all. Even details of the setlist are new.

Mike’s Bowie recording comes from his pre-Nakamichi 550 era, when he was still recording on the Sony cassette deck with what Jim R remembers as Shure microphones. As we heard on his Jethro Tull ’75 tape, he was still getting very good results even before the equipment upgrade. But by his own ratings system, Millard scored his Bowie ’74 master “Bad.”

Mike was his own toughest critic, and some of the tapes he rated as middling have proven to be excellent. Unfortunately, that is not the case here.

The reason for the harsh rating isn’t down to his recording gear but the venue. Mike grabs the whole show with his usual skill, but due to the positioning of his seats and the PA mixed with venue acoustics, there is a truly nasty echo afoot. The tape has portions that are clear and highly listenable, but when it gets loud, the bass end blows out and worse still, the echo causes what you might call a double hit, meaning you hear the drum quickly followed by an almost equally loud echo of that drum hit. Instead of “THUMP,” we get “THUMP-thump.”

The result is bizarre as the tape is quite good in spots, while at other times the echo layer and bass issues kind of overwhelm everything. We did work in mastering to mitigate the issues a little and even called on some of our audio expert friends to see if they might have corrective suggestions. We improved things on the margins, but the problem I have described remains quite present. Samples provided.

That’s a shame because this is a very good Bowie performance. We’re blessed to have a high quality soundboard recording of the show two weeks earlier at the Universal Amphitheatre, but the sets are different, notably the closer “Somebody Up There Likes Me” which wouldn’t be released until Young Americans in 1975.

I was reading a post recently about having “bootleg ears,” which is the ability to tune into a recording of varying quality and hear past its deficiencies. That’s a good approach for this challenging but ultimately rewarding Millard master that captures the last show of the original Diamond Dogs tour. When Bowie resumed in October, the band line up had changed for what’s often referred to as the Soul or Philly Dogs tour.

Here’s what Jim R recalled about the show:

Mike and I along with a friend of Mike's attended the David Bowie concert on Sept 16, 1974 at the Anaheim Convention Center. We sat on the Floor, 15th row center. Roughly 10 rows behind our sweet spot. This was the first Bowie concert for any of us.

The show was in the "Pre Wheelchair Era.” Security was extremely relaxed at the Convention Center, in fact it was more at an "amateur hour" level. I smuggled in fresh batteries in a fake lens case at the bottom of my camera bag. If Mike was stopped by security, he would simply offer up his batteries, knowing all the while I had a fresh set if needed. We would enter into the building using separate doors to avoid the appearance we knew each other.

This was also the "Pre Nak Era.” Mike used a Sony TC-152SD and Shure mics I smuggled in my camera bag and Mike's friend smuggled in an 8mm movie camera. The three of us met up several days later at Mike's house syncing up the film with Mike's recording. It would be in perfect sync for several seconds, then drift apart. A little frustrating, but it was loads of fun. Where is that footage now?

Mike had not utilized the hat yet for holding his mics. He taped the Shure mics to the chair arms. We then covered them up with a jacket with the mic heads sticking out. Speaking of amateur hour, if you listen closely, you can hear us talking, Mike included, between songs. Sometimes our voices sound more distant, confirming the microphone location on the chair arms further from our mouths than if the mics were in Millard’s hat.

The Anaheim Convention Center is small for an arena. Capacity is around 7500. Despite the smaller size and our 15th row seats, the sound quality was not very good. Perhaps they skimped out on the PA system. Being in the 15th row caused my pictures to be on the grainy side. But what can you do, we were happy to be there.

Despite the sound system, the show was great. David's voice was in fantastic shape and showed tremendous range.

Of note, the face value of the ticket is $9.00, very high for 1974 standards. The highest price was usually $6.50 or $7.50. Did the higher price cover Bowie’s theatrical props?

I hope you enjoy Mike’s recording and my pictures.

###

JEMS is proud to partner with Rob, Jim R and Barry G to release Millard's historic recordings and to help set the record straight about the man himself.

We can’t thank Rob enough for reconnecting with Jim and putting his trust in our Millard reissue campaign. He kept these precious tapes under wraps for two decades, but once Rob learned of our methods and stewardship, he agreed to contribute the Millard DATs and cassettes to the program. You’ll be pleased to learn Rob found a few more master tapes in recent weeks, as the Millard canon continues to expand. It is also amazing to pair these recordings with Jim’s previously unpublished photos of the same show. 15th row or not, he got some great shots this night.

As always, special thanks to our post-production supervisor mjk5510. Even when we think we have finished the work, he does something extra to make the final version that much better. Shoutout as well to Goody for his help in correcting the pitch on this show.

In these unprecedented times we will continue to put more music in your hands and ears while everyone is bunkered in.

Please stay positive, help your neighbors, help strangers and let’s get to the other side of this intact. Better still, make a donation to a food bank or other key support organization helping out those who are struggling even more than you are to get by.

Lastly, cheers to the late, great Mike the MICrophone. His work never ceases to impress. May he rest in peace.

This is a great sound quality stereo recording. The applause was missing after most tracks which is hardly a big issue - while a good audience reaction can be heartening, loud applause does become fatiguing for me - and others - in concert recordings. One drawback of the very clear sound quality does mean that coughs in the audience, fairly close to the taper, are quite audible.

For me, it seems to take a while for things to gel with the new band, but certainly from The Partisan onwards, things fall into place. Prior to that, the evergreens work best for me - namely So long, Marianne and Suzanne. Diamonds in the Mine is given a reggae treatment! To be honest, this does work, and the audience love it - the backing vocalists, Emily Bindiger and Erin Dickens, sing wonderfully here.

The use of flutes on Sisters of Mercy certainly gets my applause...Emily and Erin's backing vocals on this song are particularly lovely, too.

On Suzanne and The Butcher there a couple of balance issues as the sounds drifts to the right channel. I have not addressed this as this is an unaltered torrent in the spirit of the no eq'ing preference here. If someone wanted to do a combined or even matrix torrent with the mono full recording of this concert which is on dime, who knows that issue could be addressed there.

If this is for you, enjoy.

LEONARD COHEN SOUGHT.

BBC session recorded 14th July 1968, broadcast Sept '68
In July 1968 Leonard recorded a session with the Tony Gilbert group for the BBC where he played 5 songs:

You Know Who I Am
Like A Bird On A Wire
Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye
Dress Rehearsal Rag
So Long, Marianne

The first 4 songs have now been shared in lossless form. The last, So Long, Marianne, only circulates in mp3 derived form currently, on grey market CDs.

Leonard Cohen's legacy surely deserves better? If you or anyone you know have a recording of the session including the last track in lossless form, it would be very interesting to hear it if it could be shared.

If you can help, thanks.
