Note that the last three tracks of disc two (which comprise the encore in full) are not from the master soundboard source. They are in mono, but from a direct source nonetheless. It's likely they originate from an in-house video soundtrack, though I can't confirm this.

With the above caveat out of the way, it's an absolute pleasure to present another blistering show from the 2000 tour in pristine quality. What separates this recording from many others is that it hasn't been widely circulated. I'm pleased to present, for quite likely the first time in public domain, this wonderful show...and what better venue for its release than a site sanctioned by Pete Townshend himself. Those who have heard this show already know what a treat it is; those who will be hearing it for the first time will no doubt enjoy it time and time again. It's simply another rare gem that is finally, and rightfully, seeing the light of day. As always, enjoy!!!

Date: 7-7-00
Source: Soundboard>CDR>Re-mastered>SHN
Quality: EX+/EX
Media: 2 cdr SHN. that folds out to 3 cdr audio
Additional Notes: Simply,,,, wonderful !
Re-mastered by: John Atyim
Artwork by: "Slipkid"

Remastered from cdr, this recording when I first heard it struck me
kind of funny on how it almost sounds like the soundboard tapes that
I've heard once before such as the Led Zeppelin 1980 tour over Europe.
As the audience is compressed and limited to the point where you can
barely hear them, and the band sounds like as if they are playing in a
small concert hall by themselves. These kind of recordings you can hear
everything that the band is doing on stage. WW22 is The Who at the
Blockbuster-Sony Center, Camden, New Jersey 7-7-00.

During this show the band mainly features songs from the "Lifehouse
Project" otherwise commonly known as "Who's Next". Pete's Guitar sounds
nice and crunchy during this show, the only thing's I did to this
recording when I received it was take out some "digital artifacts",
re-enhance the bass & mid-range to add more dimension to the recording
giving it a little more bottom end and using some noise reduction in
certain spots. And a special thanks to "Slipkid" for doing the artwork
for us. I happen to believe this is the best sounding Whoweed release
to date. Can somebody please send me more of these soundboard
recordings ?... Pretty please ??

Enjoy !

John

This is a liberated bootleg and it has been bugging me for a long time. The performance is really fine, especially considering the fact that it is one of the very last gigs with the late John Entwistle, but it is marred by miserable mastering. Maybe the problem lies already in the taping equipment or equaliser setting, who knows. I bought it some time ago and I desperately wanted to improve it, because the performance deserves it, but to no avail. The original recording has the channels well out of balance, which I corrected quite easily, but it has virtually no lower frequencies, which makes Johnís bass almost inaudible. So I thought some EQing would serve it well, but when I added a bit of the lower frequencies it just became too boomy and even more unpleasant to listen to than the original flat sound. So I only got the channel balance right and added but a pinch of bass which still makes it bearable. I thought I might return to improve it one day, but then I let it lie for more than two years and when I eventually got back to it I ended up helpless. So if some gadget wizard manages to squeeze better sound from it, please do and reseed a remaster. (I can also provide the original recording so that you can begin from scratch.)

The Real Me sbd recording from this concert is available on the Greatest Hits Live, so you can compare this one with the fully fledged sound. Youíll notice a massive difference, this being rather distant and flat, with Johnís bass prominent only a little during the ìpaving stonesî fills. Considering the technological possibilities in the new century, Iíd still rate this audience recording as B-. But itís a great performance; it would just be great to have it in better quality. (Obviously, if they could release one song from that night, a recording of the whole gig must sit in the bandís archives.) Nevertheless, here you have it as is, the last of three warm-up gigs before Johnís final two TCT charity shows at the RAH a week later.

I added the original artwork; it is interesting that the booklet contains the original schedule of the American tour, beginning at the Joint in Vegas, which might lead one to assume that it was released still before Johnís demise. Also the inclusion of the www.thewho.net domain makes you wonder.

Notes:

A vgood-excellant mono audience recording of the Who's Sheffield 2000
concert. In addition to general editing for CD, the master has also
been speed corrected. Mostly complete except for slight cuts during
'I Can't Explain', 'Who Are You', and 'Won't Get Fooled Again'. Volume
levels for much of John's bass solo during '515' were quite low; the
solo has been restored, and, although the sound quality is relatively
poor compared to the rest of the track, it has been included for obvious
reasons. The last two numbers are a bit 'pitchy', noticeable, but only
a minor distraction. Technical issues aside, the show overall sounds
great, and the Who are, of course, brilliant! A killer setlist with
lots of entertaining bantar between numbers, highly recommended.

Many thanks once again to 'Quadboy555' for taping and sharing yet another
classic Who show ... CHEERS! All the best my friend, it's been a pleasure.

'Quadboy555' wrote ...

"Some notes on Sheffield then. Joe Strummer supported them this night.
I recorded [the Who] eight rows from the front [usual equipment]. I
had several [alcoholic] drinks before the show, went there to enjoy
myself and the show. Taping (was) an afterthought, something to take
away from the show apart from the usual overpriced t-shirt. Apologies
to any downloaders for my audible comments and singing during several
songs. Needless to say I won't be auditioning for this years X-factor.
(I) missed the first few seconds of 'I Can't Explain' after visiting (the)
toilets, the mess in the middle of 'Who Are You', me and my brother talking
between tracks, nearly stopped taping when Pete played 'Drowned' ... had
been to 4 UK Quad shows where he sang it solo, wish Roger would take it
up again ... was it '75 when he last sung it (?) Pete should play
I'm One' instead. I remember there being some good stage banter on it
[the moving knobs joke]. At least I got a good tape flip!"
