Notes:

I like this show. In fact I like this show a lot. Quality is a little rough to say the least with an ever present hiss but the guitar and vocals are clear enough.

If you're prepared to get past the aural rubbish you will find a diamond of a concert beneath.

With a stellar version of Stone Free, one of the finest and rarely equalled;

an intense rendition of Hear My Train topped off by a bluesy Red House this is one show that could

have done with a second and clearer source surfacing.

This particular recording may be considered suitable for

Hendrix diehards only, not for the casual ear but give it a try even

if it's just for the first two numbers.

Pass It On.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Memorial Auditorium, Dallas, Texas, USA

Sunday 20 April 1969

This is a composite master prepared from two different copies of this tape.

All copies in circulation seem to be incomplete, some copies only run for 46 minutes,

others are almost complete at 55 minutes but they all have bits missing that other copies

do have and most are high generation dubs with hiss, buzzing & crackle.

Most copies have the end of Purple Haze cut.

Voodoo Child (slight return) fades out on the master but only after circa 9 minutes, many copies have the end of the track truncated

Almost all copies have some or all of the tune-up preceding Stone Free cut.

So the only option was to make a composite, two copies of the tape were received from Hendrix collectors active since the 70s

both are still hissy and some generations removed from the master but both sounded better

than anything else in general circulation at the moment.

This composite would now seem to include the complete recording,

all cuts in the music were on all copies checked and thus seem to be on the master tape.

Here's a rundown of the recording, a star *

indicates a cut in the tape, the spots where the main source was patched with the 2nd source are also noted:

(short missing bit of tune-up patched)

1 Stone free (fades in)

2 Getting my heart back together (start slightly cut)

3 Foxy lady (start slightly cut)

4 I don't live today (start slightly cut)

5 Fire (start cut, tape speed-up at 0.03, some slight tape damage / wobble - not on master?* (end of Fire and start of Red House patched)

7 Red house (start cut) (cut at 2.41, tape speed-up at 6.37) (tape flip on main source patched)

8 Star spangled banner (start slightly cut)

9 Purple haze (end garbled)\par

10 Voodoo child (slight return) (start slightly cut, end fades out, very likely on the master as no other copy seems to run longer)

Lineage:

Composite of two unknown generation dubs,

possibly low but definately at least 2 generations removed from the master

Taper: mjk5510

Transfer: Audience Master (D6) > Nakamichi CR5A (azimuth adjusted) > MacBook Pro > Audacity > Peak Pro XT > xACT > FLAC

I received approval from the mods to include the radio commercial advertising the show as long as I listed how many song snippets there are and how long the longest one is (56 second commercial with 7 song snippets with the longest being 8 seconds).

The opening band was Aztec Camera which I taped as well if anyone is interested, in the commercial they are mistakenly called as Aztec Alarm.

I can't recall if I've shared the master before but this is the first proper azimuth adjusted transfer, I consider this superior to any older transfer I may have done.

As always, samples below - this one sounds best with some volume behind it!

Good show though a little short. The entire concert clocked in at about 82 minutes.

I left it completely in tact here but there is more than enough audience clapping at the

end of Walk This Way to edit out to fit it onto one disc.

Where I was standing I had a bit of a cross breeze that can be heard

on occasion but nothing too bad.Crowd noise during songs is not too bad either.

Overall a VG+ audience recording.

Review:

An excellent show, perfectly consolidating all of the great playing that this tour had produced, from the powerful opener to the extended end of show medley, complete with Plant doing his best adlibs yet. An easy choice for one of the very best shows of the year. As if the performance wasn't enough, a superb soundboard, as well as a near-excellent audience sources circulate for this show. Plant mentioned about the cancelled August 4th concert: "It's very nice to be back in Texas. Last time we were here it was a near disaster when we said we weren't doing the festival and everything. This is the last date before we go back to England, so we'd really like to have a nice time ... And you can help us." Plant also apologised for cutting the set short: "We've got to say goodnight according to the programme. Unfortunately, the programme has got a little delayed but there's nothing we can do about it!" Pages amps act up during a few spots in the show, producing brief crackling sounds, as if his guitar cable or a connection somewhere was coming loose. Although not at all a distraction for the listener, this makes for a funny moment during Dazed And Confused and How Many More Times, when Page's amps can be heard briefly picking up the sound of the festival security staff speaking on their radios.

Got a working cassette deck at a garage sale and decided to transfer and share a show form the old cassette days to celebrate.  Kept coming back to this show that I had transferred but not shared, because I knew my transfer left a bit to be desired.  I transferred it in my make it louder days.  And boy was it loud.........and shrill.......and harsh.......and a mess.  So I think I fixed that.  I remember reading a comment by Steve Hoffman, where he said something along the lines of master to the strength of the band.  So I mastered this, I think, to reveal the power and thunder of ACDC.  At least as much as was captured by an old Sony T Mic, a normal bias tape, and a Sony recording Walkman 2 doing all it can to capture the volume of a band while automatically setting the levels.  I had really good seats for this show, and I had the T mic on an extension cord, so it was elevated above waist level.  Sometimes things work out.  There is nary a note missing from tape flip/changes.  This is a pretty decent recording.  Yes it is harsh and a bit over-saturated in places, but the hardware was working as hard as it could, and I doubt much better could have been done with the material at hand.  Tracks done on the fly.  Enjoy.
