FM broadcast
sourced from a tape of unknown generation

the SHN files have seek tables appended

---------------------------
notes from the seed (Matt P.):

I remastered the *hell* out of this one (using WaveLab, mainly to
minimize hiss). It's pretty nice, I grade it an A-, though I'm
sure some might give a B+. It's not as pristine as the Houston show
(incomplete, because songs that were played were not broadcasted),
but it's the best "full show" snapshot of the Big Generator tour
I've heard. There is one flaw that bugs me, you can hear something
else in the background in a couple places, like someone used an old
tape and you can hear what was taped over.

YES was:
Jon Anderson, vocals
Tony Kaye, keyboards
Trevor Rabin, guitar & vocals
Chris Squire, bass
Alan White, drums

NOTES:

Nice show I drove a long ass way to see and tape. The 10th anniversary of my first trip

to TO to see RUSH in 1994, the last show of the Counterparts tour. That roadtrip was the

seed planted that sprung to life, my followup trips to see Rush on the future tours starting in

1996. This trip was a great anniversary and so worth it. The sound wasn't very loud, which is

typical for a Yes show and actually I think this recording sounds better than what I remember

hearing at the show since it was so quiet. Asshat "woo hoo" guy and talker is a bit distracting

in a couple songs but for the most part he keeps his mouth shut. There was no way to put this on

two 80 min discs without cutting crowd, etc. SSotS is incredible, so are the Mind Drive tracks.

Wow, I would never have thought they could have come off so wonderful, but they do. I loved the

acoustic set and Wakeman's The Meeting is so beautiful. Rhythm of Love seems out of place but its

ok I guess. Rital is a tour-de-force. I hated Topo when I first heard it, I just didn't get it (I

think I was too young) until I heard some of the songs live...incredible. "Soon" is just hypnotic,

an amazing performance of this song, Jon's voice was absolutely in perfect order at the end of the

show and Steve just whining away on slide guitar is so mesmorizing. For those that missed it the

first time around, here you go.

Post it anywhere but please, keep the file set intact.

Here is one that I am sure no one else recorded.......

Aud Recording A-
Recorded By Normnomo
Mastered by Relayerman

Recorded with Core Sound Mics and An IHP120 set on the lowest recording level.
I was next to the guy that took the picture that is used on the arts back cover..(I promise him a copy of this show in the mail since he ran defence for me and blocked the security staffs view of me recording the show)...yeah we were in the rafters right in fron of the left speaker aray....third level...far left corner in front of steve Howe. I did not think my battery for the bass roll off was strong enough to do the whole show so I put it in my pocket and set the unit on 'ONE" to record. The Philly show in 2004 was recorded by me on "Four" and that was way too hot so I figued I could get away with this one set at the lowest......WRONG.....many place were still too hot and the worst was during AYAI. I tried tried to master this one but I hated my version. Pat and Carrie from the Yesbrew team worked on it and their version was only a litle beter than mine. Relayerman came to my aid and did a slam dunk on fixing this one.....I am very humbled by his work. He did a bang up job fixing all the clipped hot spots...AYAI is is hot in places but I agree with him you can only take this show so far before you start hurting the quality....I will say many songs on this recording are great....Relayerman give the entire show a A- grade and I feel pretty damm good getting that high a mark from a fan like him.

Here is a list of what he did in his own words........<

Here is what I did in order:
1) did clipped peak restoration
2) lessened volume by -7db
3) applied a custom paragraphic EQ that rolls off bass and highs
4) applied a custom compression that enhances voice
5) applied another compression for 16 bit WAVs
6) applied one final clipped peak restoration in case I introduced
any from the EQ and compressions

Both Relayerman and myself have agreed to not shorten this show....Please leave it alone and do not try to redo or shorten it.....we want the entire Yes gig to be heard in it's entirety JUST AS IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!! Trade and download freely......SELL THIS ON EBAY AND YOU CAN BURN IN HELL YOU WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT!!!!!!I WILL BE WATCHING!

Comments:
Another one of my masters from the Concord Pavilion, for whatever reason, it came out too bassy in alot of places. Only download this if you're a HUGE Yes fan and don't mind turning the bass knob back on your stereo or feel like remastering it to reduce the bass response. I suppose some Yes fans find the "Talk" tour was lame, but it is what it is,live music, take it or leave it.

When Ron asked me if I'd be interested in creating a surround mix for this show I agreed because of the uniqueness of the show with an orchestra compared to any other average Yes show. I was sent the three recordings as they were generally released to the trackers and decided on which one to use for what location in the surround field based on their characteristics.

What I heard was essentially three recordings in a line moving away from the stage. The Smashmark tape was neraly in mono and very tight to the music, not much reverb and only close audience members. Recorder 1 had decent stereo separation and audience, and Tapehead2's had a big hall reverb. This made them perfect candidates for center, front and rear, respectively.

When I began trying to sync tapes 1 & 3 I ran into problems that just couldn't be resolved and brought this up to Ron. He contacted the tapers and got fresh master rips for us to use. Taper 1 gave me two transfers from his DAT, one digital and one analog. I tried the synchronization again, but found several errors in the digital transfer. I finally decided to use the analog transfer for the front left and right channels. It has a little hiss, but is an unbroken transfer of the entire show complete with intro and outro music. I also found out that the release master I was using before had a multitude of micro-edits in it to remove loud claps, which was why I couldn't get the sync correct. With this new transfer it was no problem.

In the meantime Ron told me he had been editing the video to sync up to Tapehead2's recording, so I decided to use her recording as a base for speed correcting the other two.

Tapehead2's recording was from her CD-Rs and had minute edits in some of the dialogue and several disc change breaks. These breaks were re-timed to match the unbroken taper 1 stream, then filled in with ambience from elsewhere in the recording. The same was done for the Smashmark tape, which also had several breaks in it. In no case was it necessary to patch one taper with another, so the sound field should remain unaltered throughout.

...Speaking of which, I must hand it to all three tapers, all of whom performed brilliantly and professionally. These recordings are all free of particularly annoying audience (well, taper 3 has a singer), and the soundfields on all do not waver in any way. Volume and mic placement are consistent throughout. It made for an easy mix where the levels didn't have to be adjusted frequently as they would have if one of these had been limited or compressed in any way (a situation I've come across several times).

After all the mixing was done the low end from tapers 1 & 2 was summed together and sent to the sub.

What you get in the end is a recording that begins with the orchestral introduction in stereo, then when the band comes on stage the other three channels join in and create an immersive sound experience that puts you in the center of the Radio City Music Hall.

All work on this was done with Adobe Audition 1.5, along with some plugins. Each recording was EQd so as to sound best with the other two, and considering it's placement in the room. For the DVD stereo PCM track the 5.1 mix was reduced to stereo with the jbabcock and Tapehead2 tapes panned to the sides and the Smashmark tape in mono in the center to give the recording a tighter image.

A 16/44.1 resample is provided in this package as well. This is the same as the stereo PCM track on the DVD, but at CD quality, and is designed for both continuous seamless playback on harddrive based players and for CD burning. It contains optional tracks at the end of the sets to be used for different purposes. For seamless playback put the fadeless segues in your playlist. For CD burning optional fade-ins and -outs are also provided. Use these instead of the seamless segues and your CDs will have smooth fades at both ends.

There are some click like sounds here and there, but
that is the way they are on my discs, don`t know
if it`s just my source or that it is from the master.

Also as there was the seemingly lossy problem with my previous upload (Yes HMH Nov 21, 2001), i decided to call on the help of the Dime Mods. Mod jupiter 2101 was kind enough to help me figure out if this torrent was o.k. to uplaod or not. It took some time, but i got the o.k. to upload. jupiter 2101 asked a friend (fellow Mod?) as he said it was o.k. I asked if it was o.k. to use that confirmation in my textfile, but jupiter 2101 could not speak for his friend, but i could upload the torrent and include the EAC FA & SA, which i did. So i hope all is well then (and many thanks to the Mods that helped).

I hope you enjoy this one as much as i had uploading it for you!

I`m not online 24/7, it is what it is!

Mike Purdy Yesworld Review:

Venue: Philadelphia, PA, August 21
Posted by: Mike (mpurdy@jwpepper.com)

A previous reviewer (Barry) suggested some words from a member of
the orchestra that played the Mann Ctr performance might be
interesting. Well, I was pleased to be in the orchestra that night.
I know there are many opinions about the use of the orchestra at
this concert but Iím very please that no one said the orchestra
sucked (smile).

Iím not sure what youíd like to know but let me start off by saying
that this is very demanding music in every respect. Without getting
technical the charts call for tremendous concentration to negotiate
the complex rhythmic passages, amazing physical endurance to play at
the sustained volume called for (Iím a brass player) and the parts
push the limits of range (high and low) of the instruments. It was
really a nightís work to say the least. Add to this that we were
allowed a 2-hour rehearsal including the 15-minute break required by
the union (Itís really expensive to pay for an orchestra of that
size). Much of the time had to be spent on working out the complex
metrics of the music and some of the straight-ahead material we did
not play until the concert.

The conductor was in total control of the session. He knew the
music upside down and backwards. He was totally in touch with the
flexibility needed for the band (YES) to give a performance that was
not a cookie cutter dog and pony show (more on this later). Now, he
took over the position after the tour started and, if I remember
correctly, he told me this was show number 10 for him. It was
really a display of musicianship that he worked so closely with the
band to keep the whole thing from crashing and burning.

It was mentioned somewhere in the reviews that the orchestral
accompaniment kept the group from being as spontaneous as in shows
without orchestra. This is somewhat true but not the total picture.
Each of us had a headset that allowed the conductor to give us
changes as they were happening during the performance and allow the
band to somewhat change the piece as they felt moved to. His
comments would range from instructions to the timpanist to not play
the percussive hits in his part as the percussionist in YES elected
to play them, to an unannounced repeat of a section and included
compliments and encouragement when the orchestra followed him or
executed a particularly difficult passage.

All in all this was quite an experience. Definitely not the typical
gig orchestral or otherwise. While I am proud of the level of
professionalism displayed by the orchestra I can only think of what
an additional performance would have been with the orchestra knowing
the music on a deeper level.

Iím certainly glad to have been part of this performance and hope
the opportunity comes around again.

Lineage:
Core Sound Binuaral (left only) > Core Sound Battery Box (bass roll off filter) > Sony TCD-D100 DAT > Oade 7-pin cable > M-Audio Audiophile USB > Cool Edit Pro 2.0 > CDWav > SHN (mwkACT, verified with shntool).

Notes:
This was a comedy of errors and annoyances for me, but it has somehow turned out more listenable than it has any right to be. A list of defects and other comments follows:

Loud crowd noise in many places, including an idiot who sat directly behind me. Too bad I didn't preserve the drunken, completely inaccurate history of Yes that he foisted upon his neighbors during intermission.

There was frequent static in the right channel (I believe I have a short in that line, as it remains a problem) which largely rendered it useless. The static-free sections were not long enough to justify trying to incorporate it.

Somewhere between the hotel and the start of the show, my DAT got put into LP mode, which is 32K, instead of 44.1k or 48k. This was not intentional.

Near the beginning of Long Distance Runaround, I got busted for having a camera. You can hear this interchange clearly, unfortunately, along with my attempts to bring it to an end as quickly as possible. At least he was oblivious to the taping. As I was sitting through Ritual later in the concert, I decided on a working title for the show--"Catch as We Look"

There is some intermittent mic noise in parts of the acoustic set. Fairly short duration, and not too distracting, compared to the other annoyances.

Having listened to the results and been rather disappointed, I finally decided to just make use of the left channel and see what could be done for my own use. I decided that since the recording was already considerably less than perfect, I would feel fairly unconstrained about the editing/remastering process. I converted to 44.1k (w/ highest quality setting) at 32 bits with Cool Edit Pro 2.0, and then created some simulated stereo (Graphic Phase Shifter to create different left and right channels, stereo field expansion, some reverb, etc.). Since I had used the bass roll-off filter, I boosted the low end with the parametric equalizer. I also boosted the relative volume of the acoustic set. I then made some light use of hard limiting a bit past the point that normalization would have allowed, to reduce the crowd level during applause. Realizing that the total length was just over 160 minutes, I decided to go in and edit out some of the applause--most of the applause sections have been shortened, though I made every attempt to make these deletions seamless. The transition from the end of set one to the beginning of the acoustic set after intermission is the only spot that still has an obvious seam. Back to 16 bits, dithered with triangular noise shaping, then CDWav, and shn'd.

I merged the two parts of Firebird Suite.
The only remastering that I did was some EQ-ing with Adobe Audition CC2014 to make the muffled recording sound much clearer.
