After a short absence, the DS Archives returns with the release of Volume 35, a low gen upgrade to the wonderful November 15, 1980 Houston, Texas show.

I had six different copies of this show to work with and the DS copy was the best of the bunch, it is possibly a 1st gen but DS just wasn't sure if it came directly from the taper so we're just going with low gen. I had a 1st gen to work with as well (the same source missing the last four songs) but this one edged it out with a richer overall sound.

I would not consider this a massive upgrade over the circulating version but IMHO it less flat and overall has a slightly richer and fuller sound. Samples provided as your mileage may vary...

Like a number of versions, this version was missing the first two minutes of "Badlands" but thanks to 'Hobbes4444' sending me his copy I was able to patch the first two minutes. Using iZotope's eqmatch I was able to match this patch very closely to the DS version.

Of course the usual detailed production/mastering that go into all my shares has been processed here, pitch adjusted, channel aligned, de-clicked, extreme audience noises extracted. Other than that, this one took very little actual mastering.

I am uploading this as I can't see this traded anywhere else. No doubt other copies are available, but I can't say if they are better quality. The music is relatively clear, but the crowd is so loud, the band couldn't hear themselves play, so their actual performance is variable.

Quality is OK. Originally it was broadcast on Radio (Pre FM), then recorded, and ultimately put to CD. I didn't want to impede the quality by altering the audio in anyway, but I am sure it could be cleaned up, if you are so inclined.

I class this concert as a "Headphone Concert". And by that I mean, that it sounds better and clearer with a good set of headphones, whereas it is quite muddied if listening through speakers.

This is the show where the "Money Changes Everything" video was shot. That portion was not broadcast, along with the last song "What A Thrill".

There was a request on Houston radio that everyone wear white clothing, so that the light show would look good on video.

There was a shorter single disc version of this broadcast that ends with "Girls Just Want to Have Fun".

This 1st gen FM copy keeps going and clocks in at just over 91 minutes.

Notes:

Sean_the_bootlegger's master recording. This is an incomplete recording. Sean was having equipment problems for this one and this is all he managed to get on tape for this show. This one until recently has been trash bin material but with today's technology we were able to salvage an extremely damaged recording and restore the almost nonexistant audio signal (as best as what the mic did grab) for most of the recording in the left channel. The results were worth the efforts since this is a very good sounding recording in the main issues aside.

Sean's notes:

Plants first tour playing Zep tunes. I must admit I was pretty excited. I had seen both of the other tours and liked what Plant was doing quite a bit. Now I was going to have some LZ in the mix. Sweet. I got my trusty recorder together and decided - just for grins - to load up my silent 8mm with a cartridge and take that in too. This is kind of the result - serious mic problems. I only ended up getting about 45 minutes of the show, and out of that 45 one channel popped in and out. Bummer. Yes, I did film a bit of Black Country Woman and had it transfered to video. A loony lady I met through doing zeppelin stuff ended up stealing it. Nice, huh? And I havent seen the reel in decades. If you know anyone that was active in the late 80s and traded video, look for it. Its out there. I traded it with a few guys. Jay in Massachussets got a copy I think. Larry in Maryland. Really, it was a weak few minutes. But hey, I guess these days its just one more thing to have, huh?
