Notes:
- Thanks to Tim Dalton for the source PCM
- Thanks to Charlie Miller for the transfer
- Thanks to m.allen for his critical listening assistance
- It's my understanding that only the 2nd Set resides in the vault, making the shnid6255 MSR>RR lineage dubious, at best. Additionally, Rob Eaton lists "Set #2 Reel M->Cass 1" and it is not believed to be in the wild (2/2018)
- Do not let the lineage deter you, this is an upgrade to what circulates
- Very slight crackle at the begining of "Sugaree"
- Tape flip at the beginning of "Black Peter" smoothed
- Intermittent, slight buzz for 0:25 or so in "Sugar Magnolia", also present on shnid6255
- Sunshine Daydream clipped
- Beginning of "Mexicali Blues" clipped (smoothed)
- Tape flip in "Deal" smoothed
- Tape flip in the "Turn On Your Lovelight > Going Down The Road Feeling Bad " transition smoothed

This is probably the best bootleg recording that exists from this period of Elton John's career, and has been available for several years in bootleg form. I have not seen it posted here, so here you go. It is a stellar
soundboard recording, with the only drawback being that the audience sounds like it is in another room (although the band sounds like it is in your living room with you!).This is a MUST HAVE for any EJ fan (casual or serious).

Total running time 59 mins 42 secs

An excellent performance by the band and great stereo audience recording by the N brothers.

I transferred Preclicktrack's LPs using some very expensive audiophile gear connected up to my Saffire.

Clear Audio Innovation Compact
Clear Audio Stradivari V2 cartridge
Clear Audio Tangential tone arm TT3
Amp - Leema Acoustics - Tucana II
Not sure what interconnect we used to connect to the phono stage
Phono stage - Pro-Ject Audio Phono Box RS. RS set to fixed input impedance, gain RIAA 60dB RCA
Turntable to phono stage cable - The Chord Company, Sarum Super Aray RCA cable
Mains conditioner for all connected equipment - Sigma, IsoTek EVO3
Both sides were copied at the same level. Side A contains tracks 1,2,5 and B 3,4.

I used ClickRepair in automated mode to find and repair clicks and crackles:
1. Declick 60, wavelet x 3, reverse, pitch protection
2. Decrackle 60, wavelet x 3, reverse

Side A of the LP is notably quieter than B and I added gain in iZotope to even the recording out. Speed correction assistance was provided by tezeta. He applied a simple reduction of .75 semis to STC and ASOS using Elastique in Reaper v5.17.

I believe that this copy supersedes the version Preclicktrack and I released in 2014 but the differences, for general listening purposes, are quite subtle. The track marks are in the same positions so you can compare the two.

The Toledo Sports Arena

I recorded this in the audience on a General Electric mono cassette recorder with external mic.

Master cassette is gone.

Dubbed the cassette onto one mono track of a 3M Scotch 111 5" reel on a Sears stereo reel-to-reel at 3 3/4 ips circa early 1972. While I don't remember how much play the original cassette received, the reel has received heavy play throughout the years until I made this digital copy.

Digital copy made in 2001

Playback machine: TEAC A-2340 4-track 7" reel

Straight to computer with Sound Blaster card

Software: Steinberg Wavelab 4.0

I don't remember exactly but, considering the sound of the source reel, I surely did some volume and transient peak adjustments and likely applied some EQ. I don't think I used any noise reduction but it's a good possibility. Likewise, I might have applied some other minimal processing.

I originally posted this on my website a few years ago so, it's already out there. I figured I'd propagate it a bit more with a torrent. Torrent and all files made with Traders's Little Helper November 2012.

ARTWORK:

It was designed from scans of the original tape box.

- front cover (which features an ad for the show from The Toledo Blade newspaper)

- inside liner notes

- back cover (the gallows photo is NOT the Toledo show)

- tray showing the reel (for a clear tray)

11. Under My Wheels

* Track 01 - Note the MC's announcement about throwing things on stage. It was at this same venue, two years later in Dec.1973, that the band stopped the show after only a couple of songs because someone threw firecrackers on stage. They didn't return to the stage to finish the show.

** Track 09 - I don't remember where the original cassette side change occurred but I think it was at 4:40 on this track.

*** Track 10 - Extends into a jam of the "School's Out" riff.

On a side note, this recording is quite special to me. It was the third concert I ever attended. All three being in 1971 with The Stooges and The Guess Who for the first two. But, more so, this was the first of many concerts I would record and I've enoyed it often over 40 years.

Stratcat58's cassettes contain the most complete copy of this concert that is in general circulation.

You may have a previous transfer by Beechwoods of Stratcat58's tapes. The three of us think my version has come out better.

This is a raw transfer. I transferred side A and B at the same level. Sides C and D are a lot louder and I set different levels for each. FOS has an internal cut at the end of side A and continues on side B. Side B ends with ROTSON. Side C has STC and Cymbaline, and tracks 9-12 are on D.

It appears that all circulating copies have bleed through from another recording from Set The Controls through to Cymbaline.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Original notes from Norsound: These three tracks are from the cassette shown in the picture, which is

an alternate source recording of the 1971 show in Vancouver Canada. I got this cassette in a box of

Led Zeppelin recordings which came from a friend of mine who has passed on. I noticed in May of 2022

that this show was not showing on YouTube, and I put it on the back burner to look into it to see if

it was in fact an uncirculated recording. Well apparently another version of the show has circulated

all these years, albeit not widely! A version finally made an appearance on YouTube late 2022,

although it is missing these opening tracks and throughout the show has other cuts, especially

between songs. I suspect that this cassette is a dub off of the master. I am going to make a best

effort to get that cassette converted into a digital format. Okay - and because someone will ask -

I did listen to the end of Stairway to Heaven through Going to California... there are no cuts,

and there is commentary from Robert Plant about the new album (IV) coming out in "3 weeks", and

this show being the first in North America in what will be a very full year ("12 months") of shows.

This also confirmed it was a different recording entirely, as there was not someone giving their

address in Powell River! LOL. So stay tuned for the entirety of the cassette - I'll get to it ASAP.

==========================================================================================================

3hrs notes: Thanks to the taper and to Norsound for liberating this alternate recording, which

includes the first three songs not found on source 1. There was a tape flip and several small cuts

in Dazed And Confused, which I pieced together. There were also several long breaks in-between songs,

which when greater than a minute long prompted me to split them into their own tracks, as well.

I suspect there will be a higher bitrate release, source mix, and several remasters soon.

Notes:

Thanks Dave for this info file!

This is a new rip from the 4CD silvers of the first 2 CDs. Soundboard source plus audience source to fill the gaps.

Silvers > wav (EAC w/log files) > shn w/seek tables appended (mkwACT).

If anyone wants the audience source (CD 3 & 4) I'll post them. They probably won't be in your CD player too often though.

The audience source of this was recorded by the donor of the mystery drive. He was 12 years old. Although he was never in the trading scene, a few years before I met him he responded to an ad in the Recycler looking for Led Zeppelin tapes.

He passed away on December 31 and at his funeral it was mentioned in his eulogy and remembrances that he got to hear Stairway To Heaven before his released to give you idea the outsize role music and concerts played in his life and of course how much his friend and family was aware of it.

I also read Jimmy Page referenced this recording in an interview 20 years ago when he was talking about mining old bootlegs for riffs he came up with on the spot during the extended jams.

The audience recording is incomplete and there are so many sources of this recording that I never really gave it more a cursory review just the same but I just wanted to share the story. I never posted anything about his identity or the obituary from the paper lest Nirvana fans or whatever try to track down the listed survivors looking for those tapes. I wouldn't put it past some people. But those tapes are long gone and this drive is all we have, hence my urgency to employ the LOCKSS system and get it all out there.

In spite of what the info files says it appears this file does include the audience version.

This version of the tracks is complete unlike my February 2015 release. It is also significantly more dynamic and detailed but there is some distortion that was not present on the DAT. Careful53's tape peaks at around 0dB so the harm must have occurred earlier in the lineage. I also have a 3rd gen marbal version which has notably less high end and the same distortion.

I used iZotope to improve the balance between the channels and align the azimuth, then added 1.68dB in Reaper before exporting.

I agree with goldenband who commented in 2015 that these songs fit into a pattern of Pink Floyd outtakes being a lot weirder and, sometimes, less aesthetically successful.
