JEMS is pleased to reignite our Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone series,
presenting recordings made by legendary taper Mike Millard, AKA Mike the MICrophone,
best known for his masters of Led Zeppelin done in and around LA circa 1975-77. For
further details on how some tapes in this series came to be lost and found again,
as well as JEMS' history with Mike Millard, please refer to the notes in

Volume 16 is a special one indeed as it presents Millard’s excellent recording of
David Bowie at the Forum on the Isolar II tour, a show made famous by the bootleg
Slaughter in the Air. As I began working on this project I did a bit of Internet
research, where it has been speculated that the Slaughter recording was a Millard
master, presumably based on its quality. To the best of our knowledge, previous DIME
torrents of Forum ’78 are vinyl rips of Slaughter and various other bootlegs sourced
from the same tape.

YouTube also has a second source of the show, vastly inferior in quality, but which does
include the opening song, “Warszawa,” which is omitted from the bootleg sources.

Millard’s capture features “Warszawa,” and I assumed it had been cut for space on bootleg
vinyl. But when I did an A-B comparison in a couple of spots, I was surprised to learn
that Millard’s recording is not the one featured on Slaughter and is in fact a third
source. While I can’t say with certainty it is wholly uncirculated, it is surely new to
most and presents the best and most complete recording of this show to date. It offers
superior fidelity to Slaughter and is classic Millard in terms of clarity. There are some
potent whistlers present and close by, but thanks to mjk5510, we’ve tamed those for
maximum listening pleasure. Samples provided.

Isolar II is one of my favorite Bowie tours, brilliantly mixing the art rock of the
Berlin records with a fresh take on the Ziggy era and other contemporary goodies like
“Station to Station,” “TVC 15” and “Stay.” It sounds very fresh today, and you can’t
beat the pairing of Adrian Below and Carlos Alomar on lead and rhythm guitar
respectively, plus the incredible drumming of Dennis Davis.

Millard himself made this set of tapes for Barry G, another close friend who attended
many concerts with Mike in the ‘70s and ‘80s. We’re so grateful that Barry agreed to
share his Millard first gens with JEMS for our Lost and Found Mike the Mike series.
Like Jim R., Barry also shot photos at many of the concerts he attended, including this
one, and we’ve used those images in the artwork. Mike’s own cassette art is especially
appealing for this show.

JEMS is thrilled to partner with Barry and Jim R to release more of Millard’s fantastic
recordings and to help set the record straight about the man himself. It’s been 25 years
since he passed away, and the Internet version of his life story is highly speculative
and often inaccurate.

We can’t thank Barry enough for trusting us with his Millard tapes and his own fantastic
masters like the recently released Queen Santa Monica ’76. Tip o’ the cap as well to
mjk5510 for his essential contributions to the Lost and Found series and to Exit Club
for taking the Millard journey with us. We hope our efforts honor and celebrate the man
and the music he so brilliantly preserved.

Finally, cheers to the late, great Mike the MICrophone and to finding more lost tapes.

May he rest in peace.

This is roughly a one hour recording from the Sound + Vision tour rehearsals taken directly from the soundboard. The date and venue are unknown, but generally thought to be New York in the winter of 1990. This is the so called "DAT version" of the recording, and is better quality than the material used on the silver "Overtures And Beginners" CD.

document the 1983 Serious Moonlight Tour - a planned double album that never saw the light of day.

The last 00:57 of "China Girl" was lost during a sloppy transfer to cassette in 1995 and was patched with the FM source.

(009606)Grateful Dead 1978-10-18 &17 (2 NIGHTS),The Winterland, San Francisco, CA (FLAC)

From Egypt with LoveOne month after their legendary trip to Egypt The Grateful Dead
are back in San Francisco for 5 nights at Winterland.
It's a total of 14 hours 15 minutes and 10 seconds of history in the
final months of Winterland being a concert venue.
For at least the first 4 nights they are very much enthused and playing great!
And there's really nothing wrong with that 5th night either. It's still
The Good Old Grateful Dead!

All 5 nights were recorded from the audience by Reinhart Holwein.
And he got fabulous recordings. He was in a sweet spot for these shows!
The mix varies a bit from night to night but for the most part these are fantastic recordings.

Here we have the second night. Quite nice, great performances again.
The big jam starting with Samson right through to the end of the show is first class!
The Mind Left Body jam with elements of Got My Mojo Workin, great stuff!
I Need a Miracle is an excellent song for an encore, just done a few times.
This nights recording is really excellent. Both guitars and the bass and the piano
all come through well.

Below in the original notes they mention "Mechanical noise" that can be heard.
It doesn't sound much different than wind noise at outdoor gigs.
Anyway bits of it are on all of these recordings. I get used to it.
I can hear it especially on headphones, on speakers you may never even notice.

Below are the original notes that I have renumbered.

To burn to CD, this show would need 3.
*01-09 for CD 1.
*10-14 for CD 2.
*15-22 for CD 3.

Notes: Patch In Wharf Rat from gd78-10-18.sbd.miller.89335.sbeok.flac16.
There is some mechanical mic noise or rubbing in the right channel mid second set
starting in and most noticeable during Terrapin.
It has been addressed as best as can be expected.

Above are the original notes for shn# 100701.
=============================================

This is a remaster of shn #100701.
Thanks to the taper and the MOTB people and all who bring this stuff to share.
All of the work I do is in ocenaudio and Harrison Mixbus.
Everything I do is basically about levels. Keeping them the same in both channels
throughout the frequency range. When I speak of levels I mean RMS levels. Average levels.
I also tighten up phase issues when needed. Clear up any gaps that may be found.
If original files are high res, I have done most of the work at the higher sample frequency
and bit depths. Then towards the end I've converted to 44.1 16 bit.
There is a very short patch from the soundboard during Wharf Rat.
I've adjusted it a bit to draw less attention to itself. lol
If there was another audience recording now I would have used that for the patch.

About the screen grabs:

One can not see everything I do in these images but it shows something about
how the audio has changed between before and after.

If I'm working from high res files the before FFT and Spectral images look
quite a bit different inherently. But you can still see how they differ otherwise.

Speaking of Bob, his guitar comes through really clearly on these recordings. Several of the nights
in particular.
These all sound wonderful on headphones.

Eight show from the The Cure's current impossible-to-get-tix-for US tour. Eclectic setlist including a handful of new songs. These guys are still great and Robert Smith's voice has not aged a bit. Recorded from Orch Row J in front of the mains. Samples below. A nice recording with lot of bass. A great venue. Like the Austin show, there was a cable issue the and right channel of a few minutes towards the beginning of the show went unrecorded. (Pretty sure I need a new battery box.) I patched it with the left channel. Same issue was at the the end of Lullaby and there was a few second drop out on both channels. I patched the hole with the same bit from Austin. It is not seamless. Even with extreme eqing, it's surprising how different the two shows sound. Other than that the show sounds great. Samples below.

24bit 48K recording. If you still burn to CD, it's pretty easy to convert the files to CD specs. Most burning programs do it internally. If burning, probably divide before Push and I Can Never Say Goodbye or Lullaby

Comments:
Madonna arrived - as usual - 95 minutes late. Most of the people in our block were already drunk, which explains the odd "woohoo" or "yeaaaaaah".

The show itself was impressive in terms of lighting, stage design and dancing. The sound was miserable as hell, very bass-heavy and reverberant, even though I was sitting directly in line with the speakers to the right of the stage, a maximum of 25 metres away.

By the way: If you subtract Madonna's talks about herself and the interludes, you're left with maybe 90 minutes of songs whose selection doesn't always seem coherent. Of the 90 minutes, even a few minutes were live, otherwise the playback was all too obvious.
