I'm not the hugest Jackson Browne fan, but I do appreciate his songwriting, and a four-night run at the Beacon seemed like an ideal place to see him for the first time. Unfortunately, a lot of his other fans seemed unprepared for things like "listening" and "not talking constantly" and "being aware that there are other humans in the world other than you," which made the show a bit of a challenge to enjoy - my +1 and I both relocated to different seats a couple of times during the show to try to escape yammerers and people loudly crunching ice in our ears.
Fortunately, not much of that made it onto this recording, which as a a result I find more enjoyable to listen to than the actual concert was. There are all (or at least most of) the hits here, plus more recent songs and deeper cuts, with Browne alternating on guitar and piano and accompanied by a skillful band. Plus lots of interesting banter from the man himself, something else that comes across better in the recording thanks to the directional mics.

note=Jackson Browne (guitar, vocals, piano), David Lindley (guitar, violin, mandolin)

note=downloaded from http://www.thetradersden.org bit torrent user lilpanda
note=pre-FM sbd > unknown transfer > cdr > eac > flac
note=came as year 1973, previous two versions said 1972 (which I think is correct)
note=seeded (with below adjustments) to tradersden.org in jan-2007 and mar-2010:
note=restored first 9 seconds of first track from another version from=wp
[GOODY - Tuned up the patch +43 cents.]
note=smoothed small cut between "out to sea" & "looking into you" by cross-fading
note=removed static pops at 03:23, 03:24 & 04:42 in "talk" (before "opening farewell")
note=removed static pops at 00:42, 00:43, 00:50, 00:52, 01:02, 01:22, 01:31, 01:40, 01:50, 02:46 in "opening farewell" (there were others i couldn't remove)
[GOODY - further cleaned 01:55:01, 01:57:49, 01:58:46]
note=restored over 4 minutes of talk between "the times you've come" & "for everyman" from another version, from=wp
note=probably had been removed to fit show on one 80 min CDR
note=cross-faded applause between "for everyman" and "talk"
note=smoothed faded transition between "talk" & "redneck friend" by cross-fading
note=apparently somebody had tried to fix it before by inserting a piece from another source (which matched exactly my previous source!), but just stuck it in (so was easily removed)
note=restored last 12 seconds of last track from another version from=wp
note=on 1xCDR90 & HDD
Many thanks to those who provided and preserved the source of this fine recording and to those who improved upon it along the way to me.

Jackson Browne's Japanese tours were always big events playing multiple nights in many cities. It appears very few of the 1987 Japan leg tour circulates.
Through the foresight of my collector acquaintance, that asked to remain anonymous, who passed away a year or so ago we have a couple of 1st gen 1987 Japanese shows to get into circulation.
He did not live in North America and after his passing I found out he was terminally ill for a while and kept it private. It then became clear why he wanted to get key shows from his archives into my hands and we can thank him for the clearness of vision to make sure important parts of his archives carried on after he was gone. We've already released many things out of his archives and have more to come
Don't wait until it's too late to get those precious master recordings and uncirculated archives into circulation...we (and many others) are here to help.
As always, thanks to Goody for pitching in to get us running in tune for all our important releases.

I'm fairly sure the master tape has never been digitized, but I've got a 1st gen copy to offer.
This was a pretty interesting concert, that starts with Jackson and Sangre Machehual doing a few songs together,
then David Lindley comes out for the main show and then about half way through, special guest Bonnie Raitt comes out and helps sing a few songs.
I'd like to mention that Jackson Browne played 5 nights in California in 1987.
One of them is posted over on dime.
I'm looking for the 2 Los Angeles shows and San Diego.

Jackson Browne and opener Orleans were originally scheduled to play the Temple Music Festival on June 20th and 21st. These shows had to be rescheduled due to the tragic suicide of Browne's wife, Phyllis Major, in March of 1976.
The re-scheduled performance, taking place six days after the release of "The Pretender", bypassed the larger arena setting and takes place in the more intimate Spectrum Theatre setting.
This show appears to be uncirculated or at least under-circulated, though it should not be considered top tier quality it is of historic importance taking place in an extremely turbulent time in Jackson's life.
Thanks to Goody for the never ending pitch assistance and to the european collector who wished to remain anonymous and has since passed away.

Notes:
Here is a real find, and something I have been looking for for quite awhile, the legendary Criterion Demos made by Jackson Browne in 1970.
It includes early demo versions of most of the songs from his first album, but more importantly, about half of the 19 tracks are never-released songs by Jackson. Some of these unknown songs are startlingly good, but were surprisingly never developed any further for future release. Unlike the much earlier Nina Demos (made in 1967), which contained mainly undistinguished, forgettable, or uncharacteristic songs, this is the Jackson Browne that we know and love, just in the early stages. Thus, this is a treasure trove for fans, but has been very difficult to find for even dedicated Jackson Browne fans. No more. Here it is. Big Thanks to Chuntao (http;//www.raremps.co.uk)
for finding this and making it available.
Background: Jackson signed a co-publishing agreement with Hollywood's Criterion Music in the fall of 1969. These demo tracks were recorded in early 1970, prior to his hooking up with David Geffen, which took place later in 1970 and the recording of his first album which took place in 1971. In fact, it was this demo version of "Jamaica Say You Will" from the recording session at Criterion Studios -- which Jackson sent to David Geffen -- that attracked Geffen's attention. The track included backing by J.D. Souther (on drums?), Glenn Frey, and Ned Doheny. This was not an official album, nor was it ever intended as an official release. It was merely Jackson Browne making some demo recordings in his role as a staff writer for Criterion Music. These recordings were intended to be used to promote Jackson's songs to other artists for recording.

For America
Tender is the night
In the shape of the heart
Enough of the night
Chasing you into the light
For everyman
Anything can happen
For a dancer
Call it a loan
Cocaine
How long
Lawless avenues
The word justice
World in motion
Running on empty
The pretender
When the stone begins to turn
The load-out / Stay
Doctor my eyes
I am a patriot
