livng in Los Angeles at the time, i remember hearing a rumor that zz top had opened for the stones in hawaii,
but i had no way of knowing for sure. well apparently the rumor was correct. get ready to rock some blues, short but sweet.
i had seen them in Feb 1972 in Bryan, TX, not long before Rio Grande Mud was released, then saw them after this Hololulu stand, late July in 1973, at the Long Beach Arena, where they played some songs from newly released Tres Hombres.
thanks to the artists, tapers and sharers! enjoy!

Notes:
JEMS is proud to be able to partner with and present some of the choice recordings in the D & D archives. Some of these recordings have been around for years but none of the master tapes or safety copies in some cases have ever been digitized until now. Dave and Donn taped many shows in and around the Seattle area in the 70's and also were contemporaries of some of the JEMS members. Volume 9 captures a partial recording by Donn of one of ZZ Top's opening sets for the Rolling Stones. We are unsure exactly which show this set is from but it is either the 21st or 1 of the 2 opening sets on the 22nd. We suspect it is one of the sets from the 22nd since it seems Donn knew exactly what he wanted to tape from the set and was at all 3 shows. It is one hell of a performance for what was recorded. At this time most people hadn't heard of ZZ Top and even fewer even knew what they looked like. These 3 shows must have made an impression on people seeing them with their beards and Texas fueled boogie blues on steroids for the 1st time. The 3 songs captured here sounds like they are not content with being openers but trying to blow the Stones off the stage before they even have a chance to get on it.
