JOE'S MEMORIES:

Way back, in 1962, my grandmother bought me my first Beach Boys record. It was the "Surfin' Safari/409" single and, in those "pre-Beatle" days,

the Beach Boys were America's favorite band. They had performed in Maine once before, in 1965, but since we were all too young to drive at that time,

I didn't get to go to that show. When this show was announced, it was a "must see" for us, since it would be a rare opportunity to see the original band

(minus Brian) performing the classic songs that we grew up with, as well as selections from their most recent release, "Holland".

The only additions to the band were Blondie Chaplin, on Bass, Ricky Fataar, on Percussion and Billy Hinsche (of mid 60s teen band, Dino, Desi and Billy fame), on Guitar and Backing Vocals.

Colby College is located in Waterville, Maine and that was about a 2 to 2 1/2 hour drive from where we lived. We got tickets for the 1st show (there was a second show at 9pm),

and the four of us squeezed into my friend Jon's Porsche Carrera, for the slightly uncomfortable ride to the show. It was a "general admission' show, in the college gym,

so we got there early and got a great spot on the floor, right in front of the stage. Unfortunately, along with being "general admission", you also had to actually sit on the hardwood floor

and get into a "comfortable" cross-legged position. The Beach Boys were introduced and started the set with "Heroes And Villains", following it up with "Funky Pretty", from the new album.

They continued with all the great hits that we wanted to hear, "Darlin'", "Do It Again", "Leaving This Town" and "Help Me Rhonda", then slowed it down a bit, for the classic ballads,

"Caroline, No" and "Don't Worry Baby". Then, they picked it right back up, with "Surfin' U.S.A." and "Marcella" (a song that should have been a bigger hit than it was),

with all those great Beach Boys harmonies. They followed those with "California Saga: California" and "Sail On, Sailor", from the "Holland" album, ending the main set with

"Sloop John B", "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and an excellent "Good Vibrations", that included Mike Love playing the theremin (the electronic instrument that makes that "oooooooooh" effect),

to keep the sound of the song accurate. Throughout the set, the band was relaxed and did quite a bit of joking around between themselves, as well as talking with the audience.

Dennis Wilson even tried his hand at telling some "corny" jokes! The encore gave us all the chance to finally stand up and stretch, as they ended the show with a three song medley of

"I Get Around", "Fun, Fun, Fun" and a fine version of the Rolling Stones' "Jumping Jack Flash". This was a great finale to a show that was well worth the eight year wait and the long,

"cramped' ride. We should have stayed for the second show!

Many Many Thanks To Joe
