Earlier this year we kicked off series of releases from a long time West Coast taper/collector that recently passed away. He transferred his extensive archives to CDR years prior to his passing and then passed it to a close friend. His friend has been involved in the Bay area music scene for the last five plus decades and understands the importance of getting these historic shows out to the collector's community. We are working closely reviewing the shows and researching current circulation as well as possible upgrades.
In 1973, Santana and McLaughlin had both become disciples of spiritual teacher Sri Chinmoy, this spiritual journey affected both of their musical output and they teamed up to release "Love Devotion Surrender". Though the release was met with mixed reviews at the time there was no denying it generated blistering guitar work especially on the brief tour that followed. The album and shows were not for the casual listener with songs stretching to 30 minutes.
That brings us to one of the best shows of the tour at the intimate Community Theatre in Berkeley, CA.
There has been a lot of confusion surrounding the two shows played that night regarding if the tracks are from the early show, late show or a combination, SB or FM. We are not here to rehash that and will probably never know for sure, at this point without further confirmation this is what we have.
We used the fantastic TooleMan reconstruction from 2007 as our guide and the best circulating version available...a massive thanks to TooleMan for the previous heavy lifting to sort this show out in 2007 (wow has it really been 16 years).
**
The entire show should be considered a quality upgrade and after weeks of work reviewing and listening to the two shows side by side below are the variances between the released versions and this version, there are no additional cuts in this new version but a few interesting differences.
The first two tracks track the same, nothing additional in these two tracks.
03 A Love Supreme
On the 2007 reconstructed version there is a splice mentioned 30 minutes into the recording that falls at 17:32 into the track, likely due to a reel change. In the notes it mentions there being tape swooshing where the change occurs and the damaged area removed, it is a 100% seamless perfect edit and without having an unedited version to compare the listener would never know there was a splice.
It took a number of run throughs to figure out what exactly was missing in the reconstructed version. In this new version the gap is in the same location on the side at 30:20 (17:22 into the track) and we can confirm it is due to a reel change as you can hear the signs of the reel being stopped. However, there is no tape swooshing after the reel change and we have been able to leave in an additional 16 seconds of music falling before and after the gap. The additional music included is between 17:15 and 17:31 on the new track.
04 I'm Aware Of You
On the 2007 reconstructed version there is a seamless splice that falls at 00:02:26.361 that apparently was edited prior to the two postings that resulted in the 2007 edition, this splice is again seamless but not mentioned in the notes, you would not realize it was there if you didn't have an unedited file to compare it to.
The gap in the original recording used for this new edition, after pitch adjustment, is at 00:02:32.844, again it is definitely due to a tape change. We were able to restore 10 seconds of music edited out. For those interested, the music originally missing but restored is between 00:02:24.062 and 00:02:34.540.
Additionally all previous versions fade out at ~22 minutes, however, new to this release the track picks up again on disc 2 and we are treated to an additional 8:10 of music not previously available.
There are no differences to "Flame-Sky".
06 Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord
There are no differences in the actual music track but there is only 6 seconds of audience after the track ends on the 2007 reconstruction, this new version contains 1:36 of audience including a brief snippet of the classical outro music adding to the "you are there" feel to the evening.
For the release's title we are sticking to the way these shows were advertised as "Carlos Santana / Mahavishnu John McLaughlin", included are a couple of advertisements for the shows and an article that has nothing to do with this show but is about the spiritualism in music and contains the lines "Santana shocks rock fans when he shears his hair" as well as "In Berkeley, a recent dope smoking audience was stunned when acid rock king Carlos Santana, known for hair to his waist, emerged on stage in a POW cut and an Indian shirt." ...err...ok, I suppose that's one way to put it...
It's hard to believe this show just passed it's 50th anniversary and we hope you enjoy this new upgraded edition.

There are a number of folks we are indebted to for access to this exciting new archives, the anonymous West Coast collector, may he rest in peace, his friend that had the motivation and understands the need to get these historically important shows into circulation before they were lost forever and a huge thanks to dime member 'davmar77'. He did not currently have the bandwidth to facilitate such an undertaking at this time and put us in touch...this is how dime should work.
Big thanks to Goody, our pitch master, for his continued to support of these historic releases, he does extra duty on this series of releases helping confirm the setlists and edits, extra thanks go out to him for this critical assistance!
Over the past year or so, we've unfortunately had a number of long time tapers/collectors pass on, leaving this mortal coil, fortunately many had the foresight to secure at least a portion of their archives with friends and collectors so they could be properly released and enjoyed by generations to come.
Don't wait until it's too late to get those archives out into circulation, please get in touch, there are plenty of us here that can help get those out...no tape left behind!
