Next up for night one in Berkely is a Soundboard recording. This is an incomplete recording as it starts with Rough Ride and ends midway through Carry That Weight. I'm sure out there somewhere the rest of this exists. Initially this circulated as a 45-minute recording, sort of as a sampler, then this copy here appeared. It is a very nice listen and has been booted previously on the Yellow Cat set YC 007/8 where it was mis-identified as being the April 1st show. Sound quality here might be a touch better the YC, but we are also presenting it in Hi-Res for those who need it, enjoy!

Soundboard

There have been numerous releases of the April 1st Berkeley Soundboard over the years. I came up with seven unique releases and a few direct copies of these. Some claim to be DAT clones and others are cassette copies with little to no lineage to a 3rd generation cassette copy. Or composites of both. A lot of it has made for a very muddy picture as one comes with notes where the taper doesn’t remember which mics they used. Umm, mics, this is a soundboard isn’t it. Two clearly different copies come with the same artwork. The artwork track listing doesn’t match either recording. Muddy waters…

As far as I could ascertain what it boils down to is basically two different descendants of the original source. Each source is easy to identify as they both have two obvious but different tape flaws. Source A which seems to be the most predominant source has the beginning of “The Fool On The Hill” cut but it contains most of the intro to the song. Source B has the song complete but is missing the intro. The fact that we have cuts in both source tapes right around the 45-minute mark throws the DAT theory out the window as far as I am concerned. The common DAT tapes length at the time as I recall were 15, 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes in length. So, they wouldn’t have a tape flip at the 45-minute mark. In fact, they wouldn’t have a tape flip at all as you only record on one side of a DAT tape. I’m not ruling out the possibility of the master being DAT, but it appears the copies were probably 90-minute cassettes.

The next tape flaw is with Coming Up. For source A the song is incomplete and no attempts were made to correct the issue. Source B the song is supplemented by a portion of the song from a different source on both the releases I found. The beginning portion from April 1st is about a minute shorted then Source A. Again, a tape flip around the next 45-minute mark. Seems to confirm the cassette theory, although it could be a 90-minute DAT tape swap. My best guess is that the master is a DAT recording where the taper had a 90-minute tape and was slow to switch over to a second tape. So, the master has an incomplete “Coming Up”. This master was then copied over to cassette where on one dub lost the beginning of Fool. Maybe that mistake was realized and a second dub was made with the beginning of Fool but that left less room for Coming Up at the end of the tape. Back in the day a lot of tapers made a safety copy of their recording to make dubs from so they didn’t wear out their master. Just a theory, what do you think?

These are the sources I found.

Source A

1. My Cassette Copy

2. Unidentified (HQ) Source, that isn’t HQ.

3. PIU Records CDR Source

4. Unidentified DAT Clone Master recorded with Panasonic SV250. ‘I do not recall which mics we used for this show’. With incomplete “Coming Up “not listed on artwork. *

5. "Still Dreaming Apart" Misterclaudel mccd 134/135. Audience recording substituted for the missing parts of “TFOTH” and “Coming Up” along with Paul’s closing words added at the end.

Source B

6. Geetarz-1st four songs are CAS > DAT, the rest are DSBD. Beginning of “Coming Up“ from April 1st the end from March 31st show. *

7. SBD > DAT (48k) clone - from the collection of David Gans. Beginning of “Coming Up “from April 1st the end from March 31st show.

*Both have same artwork which says 3rd gen cassette.

In order to make what I’m presenting here I started with the Misterclaudel set which to my ears and eyes had the best sound. Surprised me too. I removed their audience recording patches and used the first 20.7 seconds of Fool from the David Gans DAT clone. This left 16 seconds of the intro missing which I took from an Audience recording of April 1st from a JeffTak Analog Master, posted by Krw_co. I was originally going to leave this bit out but as it is such a small bit I decided to include it. As far as Coming Up I simply removed the audience portion to restore it to its original state as well as the audience portion at the tail end of the show. After this I did an automatic phase correction and then split, named and tagged the files.
