Soundcheck 16-44

We spoke about this source tape earlier when we covered the Tempe Arizona Soundcheck. And as previously mentioned there are a number of releases of this tape from Yellow Cat to Unbelievable Music as well as some unidentified publishers. And among them a lot of misidentifications of the recording. Forgive me for repeating a lot of what was said earlier.

Back from day one I had two different source tapes both derived from a DAT soundboard source. One tape 85 minutes in length containing 18 tracks and the other 45 minutes containing 8 tracks. But the longer of the two tapes is sort of a sample tape someone compiled from at least two different soundchecks from different cities. I would imagine there were several sample tapes created while they were working on the official live release from this tour “Tripping the Live Fantastic” which included soundcheck songs. Over the years tape collectors have attributed the 85-minute recording to Tempe AZ Soundcheck on April 4th, 1990. And the shorter tape Tampa Florida from the 12th. If you compare both tapes you will find six tracks that are the same on both tapes. If you refer to "Eight Arms to Hold You" they list the proper tracks associated with the correct night. However, there are two tracks from the Tampa section that I am not convinced are Tampa. For the sake of clarity, I will use the song titles as listed in EATHY.

In comparing my cassette tapes with the circulating CD’s, I found some minor differences. Track 9 has an extra 32 seconds on the Unbelievable Music CD. And track 12 was missing from my cassette, so it was taken from the UM CD as well. So those two bits are not a hi-res source.

From a Spectral View track 1 "Coming Up" looks completely different than the rest of the tape. As Coming up was generally played at the end of a soundcheck it doesn't belong as the first track and I suspect it's from an entirely different location. There is a weird 'jump' in the track at the 35 second mark, plus it does not transition smoothly into track 2. Track 2 "Soundcheck" has a hum that runs thru it for the entire length which none of the other tracks have. So, I suspect that both of these tracks don't belong with this collection. But until we have some more conclusive evidence here, they will stay. One last piece that points to this is that track three starts at different points on the various source tapes. The shorter of my two cassettes had the longest version of the song. Which makes "Another Jam" actually the first Jam.

In the end we have a combination of my two cassette tapes and the UM CD to make the longest version to date, enjoy!

You might ask what's the point of this series, haven't these shows all been posted before. Well, yes, most if not all of them have been posted before. But the quality of many of them has not been good, plus the lineage of many is pretty much non-existent. Also, there are some that are posted as "source one or two" when in reality are the same recording just from a different poster or cdr. In this series alternate sources means a different taper. Plus, many of the tapes I collected at the time of the tour and are low generation, many 1st or 2nd. Plus a few masters. I am also including relevant material such as press conferences and radio broadcasts from the tour. So that we can have everything collected all in one place.

Please share freely, do not convert to lossy except for personal use. Please trade with the original files after allowing me sufficient time to post on my favorite sites.

All recordings are kept as original as possible with minimal processing. Unless noted otherwise the only adjustments made are Automatic Phase Correction, Level adjustments and cleaning of any rough or abrupt cuts.

Two Sources

For our one night stand in Tampa we have two recording sources. First one harkens back to a vintage cassette tape and is the better of the two recordings. It does have some flaws as there is a tape flip in "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Golden Slumbers", plus "The End" cuts short.

The second recorder we will call the screamer edition as there is a girl who is just screaming her head off at anything. This recording I found surfing the net in numerous places without any info attached to it. It is clearly ripped from a CDR and has SBD issues in one rip and corrupt files in another. Both copies I found are also clipped, one worse then the other. I did the best I could to breath new life into it but you can only do so much. Maybe the master is better, hopefully we can find out some day. But then again there is all that screaming...
