Dub Taylor recorded the concert using a portable 5" two track reel to reel. The tape was recorded at 7½ ips in single-track mono, so the reel had to be flipped at least every 22 minutes causing some breaks in the original recording.
Labelled as Santa Monica 1970-10-16, stratcat58's copy of 23 October 1970 starts later than jimfisheye's 2nd gen release. Comparing it to the 2nd gen, there are parts of this version that are in better condition and I rather like the soundstage.
This release could generally benefit from the weaker channel being dropped to reduce the hiss and you might like to listen to it this way. I have left it raw except for the speed correction.
Set The Controls is missing from stratcat58's copy and Atom Heart Mother cuts midway through the piece. Back in 2010 jimfisheye referred in his text file to how Mike Martin's first "early 1980s cassette transfer (TDK SA90) is missing STCFTHOTS and a section of AHM that is intact on the master as well as other audience bits missing at the start and between songs."
Stratcat58's tapes are a good candidate for being an example of this first transfer.
Tracks 8 and 9, Fat Old Sun and the incomplete Interstellar Overdrive are on side C of stratcat58's set. Side A ends with a cut in Cymbaline and it continues on side B.
