One of my DATs sourced from a German trader and friend of Grolsch, via a US collector, this is from the same source as the Smoking Blues RoIO but it has better dynamics and a full spectral. It's also less loud, hasn't been digitally de-noised and is in 48kHz. I think it has been subjected to some analogue noise reduction / EQ but the processing is not distracting.

I've worked out that the source is a low gen C90 compilation cassette. A +2.8% speed correction was applied by Bert13 to put the recording in the right ball park. Prior to the adjustment, Atom Heart Mother faded at 43m43s and the raw side B contains Cymbaline onwards, timing in at 40m3s. You can hear Side A ending and B starting on my transfer.

You might recall that Travis S negotiated a fresh transfer of Victor's 1971-09-18 recording back in 2009. I provided some advice on this and, during their correspondence, Victor revealed that compilation tapes of his 1970 recordings were in circulation. The compilations were always made on cassette and he suspected that any doing the rounds were 2nd or 3rd generation at best.

There was some digi-noise at 23m35s in the speed corrected file and a skip at 27m40s remains, which could be from the cassette to DAT transfer stage.

The German trader had his DAT on his 2009 list so the DAT lineage is at least that old. He described the analogue lineage as unknown and included the "sourced from EMI pressed white-label acetates" explanation, which was disproved some years ago, in his description.

Uher 4200s took reels up to 5”, so a recording at 7½ ips required a new tape every 15 or 22 minutes depending on whether a 600ft or 900ft reel was used. Quite a challenge to thread a new reel that regularly and retain your composure. Atom Heart Mother must have been recorded on a 900ft reel.

The quieter audience environment on the 22nd enabled Victor to make a better recording. Most people reading this are likely to be familiar with Victor's Pink Floyd recordings and it goes without saying that both captures are excellent.
