Next stop on the tour was south of the border with two shows in Brazil. I thought these two nights would be a breeze to tackle, boy was I wrong. There are a lot of bits and pieces associated with the Brazil nights and a good bunch of it widely circulating but not without it’s share of mistakes. Almost ten years ago Misterclaudel put out a five CD, two DVD set of Paul in Rio 1990 which contained both nights in one collection. Aside from having the silvers, this can be found in trade circles in two distinct forms and many of you probably already have a copy. Unfortunately, one trader took the set and broke it down into its individual pieces, Soundcheck as one post, show as another etc., and did not post all of it. Another poster shared it as the complete CD’s but omitted disc one, (1st part of night 1 show) and instead shared disc three twice (1st part of night 2). We are going to try and do this one better with some extra bits and improved quality. This post will cover night one, April 20th, and the next post will cover night two, April 21st.
For starters we have two press conferences, one that dates back to February when Paul was in Indianapolis. At that time a press conference was held for the benefit of Brazilian reports in anticipation of the upcoming dates. In addition to this we have a second press conference which was held before the April 20th show. Reportedly another PC was held before the 21st show but I don’t have a copy of it.
Then we have an audience recording of the soundcheck. It’s a decent recording, a bit distant but sounds like it was recorded from inside the stadium. Keep in mind at the time the soundchecks were basically closed-door affairs so most of the recordings from the stadium gigs are from outside the stadium. The Misterclaudel set has this recording from the same source as my cassette but the quality is not quite as good and it is not as complete. So, for this post the cassette gets the nod.
The show is next in line and this required the most work. While this recording is often referred to as a soundboard. It is not really a soundboard but a video dub taken from two hours of pro-shot video. Missing from the video was The Long and Winding Road, the end of Sgt Pepper, part of Things We Said Today and the Abbey Road Medley. Back in the day the missing bits of the video dub were flushed out with an audience recording from April 21st to give us a more complete show. And it was very well done considering it was a purely analogue process. I was initially excited to see the Misterclaudel set and hoped they had the complete dub. Unfortunately, that was not the case. They replaced a couple of the audience recorded bits, substituted The Long and Winding Road from an alternate soundboard source and apparently a different night (although the intro is still from the audience source) and the Abbey Road Medley from an unknown soundboard source (possibly the correct night as the into is from the 20th) but the other bits were still audience tapes. And once again their audio quality was a few steps down the chain from the cassette copy. Why they used the LAWR recording they did is a mystery to me as they have the correct nights recording contained in their collection on another disc. So, the show as I present it here is mainly from the cassette with the Abbey Road Medley taken from the Misterclauded set and The Long and Winding Road taken from an alternate soundboard recording from the proper night. I will get into more details on that later. I have included an extra folder with the original tracks as they appeared on the cassette if you want to go back thru the mists of time and experience it like back in the day.
Next, we finally have some true soundboard in the form of 9 sample tracks that were circulated. Now it was always assumed that these tracks are from the April 20th show. While the intro and outros are cut from most of the songs it’s hard to say for sure which night they come from, but songs that do have intro’s match the 20th performance. So, we will leave history alone and stick with the 20th as the recording date. These tracks appear both on the Misterclaudel set and a set from Voxx “Fantastic Live Outtakes”. The tracks from the Voxx set are of superior quality but for some reason the order was changed. I have arranged them back in the original order. It is the Voxx set I also took The Long and Winding Road to fill the video dub recording I spoke of earlier. The Voxx set also contains six additional tracks which are taken from the video dub, I didn’t want to be redundant so those have been omitted.
And last of all we have a bonus track which traded as the “Rio Acoustic Tracks”. This is a bunch of snippets taken from what I assume to be a Rio radio station of Paul noodling around on guitar. It is excellent quality but it sounds better than it really is as the recording runs 1:39 and is just a bunch of brief clips. As it is so short, I didn’t bother to split the tracks and try to name them as it’s over before it has begun. Enjoy!

You might ask what's the point of this series, haven't these shows all been posted before. Well, yes, most if not all of them have been posted before. But the quality of many of them has not been good, plus the lineage of many is pretty much non-existent. Also, there are some that are posted as "source one or two" when in reality are the same recording just from a different poster or cdr. In this series alternate sources means a different taper. Plus, many of the tapes I collected at the time of the tour and are low generation, many 1st or 2nd. Plus a few masters. I am also including relevant material such as press conferences and radio broadcasts from the tour. So that we can have everything collected all in one place.
Please share freely, do not convert to lossy except for personal use. Please trade with the original files after allowing me sufficient time to post on my favorite sites.
All recordings are kept as original as possible with minimal processing. Unless noted otherwise the only adjustments made are Automatic Phase Correction, Level adjustments and cleaning of any rough or abrupt cuts.

Second night of Rio and we have a soundboard soundcheck and two audience recordings to tickle our ears. The Soundcheck comes courtesy of Misterclaudel. Aside from a few level adjustments and split alignments it is mainly untouched.
We have two audience recordings from this night. First is from a vintage cassette and quite decent considering it was a stadium show with 184,000 people screaming like banshees. It was this first source that was usd to fill in the blanks on the video dub from the last post. The second recording is from Misterclaudel again and is listenable but not as good quality as the first. Again I did some level adjustments and split alignments then followed by renaming the tracks and tagging them.
